TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

I think everyone really appreciates the time and effort the team put in to organising these events, we also just like to moan a lot, it is a forum after all :)

It is an impossible task, and you can not please everyone. I know its not ideal, but there is nothing stopping people organising mini meets on a day that suits them, the problem will be that most people will be busy that day or don't want to go as they are planning to do the official meet.

I think you are going to be in that 1% of people Nat, who can not swap a Saturday shift with 6 months notice, and the other problem would of course be that if the days were swapped around, there would be someone who has to work every Sunday, and they would then moan they could not go.

I personally think the team do a fantastic job, I know I could not do it. I think the current solution of posting the meets at the start of the year is great, it gives people plenty of time to try and book days off, make a informed decision about what they are going to attend and what they are not. The tool for who is going, and where people are stopping is very helpful, and while there are numerous improvements I am sure Joel would love to make to it, it does the job of helping people sort transport and accommodation out more efficiently than on the forum.

Without further increasing the workload that the team volunteer to run this site, I am not sure what else can be done to make it easier for people to be able to attend and enjoy themselves.

The only thing I can think of to improve the current offering is to start the discussion about meets sooner, maybe 3/4 months before they are due, and get Joel's Meet Planning tool running. This just gives people more time to get organised and everything sorted. I know the flip side is that it's something extra for the team to manage, and takes the focus away from nearer events, but it could be worth testing with the August Meet, and Scarefest meet as these are two of the biggest ones in the year?

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

I'd also like to thank the team for everything they do in organising meets. It must be incredibly difficult, and arrangements are never going to suit everyone.

Until fairly recently, I had a job where I had to work most weekends (all weekend). I'm now in the very fortunate position of working regular hours in a school, but if this hadn't happened, I probably would have found myself unable to go on many meets at all. As much as I'd have hated that, I'm not sure there's a solution.

If it's any comfort though, I think quite a few people are still seeing the half term meet as a 2 day event. I for one am going on both days, staying over in the Vane in between. Hope to see you on the Sunday Nat ;D

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

For those interested in doing second day, is anyone else looking at stopping at Weathervane? Twin and family rooms (squeeze an extra bod in to family room!!) still available. Been a while since I stopped over here!!

£39 for the Sat night. Can also offer transport too and from too. PM me or message me on FB.

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

For those looking for accommodation, Ibis Budget Derby seems to be nice and cheap at the moment - only £21 for rooms when I last looked. Going to book one soon.

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

Just to give a few reasons as to why certain days were chosen for the meets:

FHT
Saturday, because it's the first day of the open season for 2014.

Mayhem Meet (CBeebies)
Saturday, because it's opening day of CBeebies.

Pleasure Beach
Saturday, because it's a 10pm close. Sunday is a 6pm close.

Fireworks
Sunday, because it's the last day of the season.

As you can see there are reasons why we wish to have the meets on Saturday and/or Sunday.

All other meets are official 2-day.

Have you stayed there Mark? The beds are so uncomfortable.

I'm booked into the Weathervane. Can't wait.

^yep, stayed there twice, found the beds perfectly comfortable. In fact found the whole hotel great, certainly on a par with Travelodges (and leagues above the Vane), and at fantastically low prices.

The only downside to such low prices is the frankly weird bathroom setup, but eh, so long as you're with people you trust, it's not an issue.

Anyway, room booked for myself, Dave P and (more likely than not ) John.

Anyone fancy a meal in the evening after park on the Saturday, perhaps somewhere in Uttox?

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

Wasn't the plan for everyone to have a meal at the Weathervane on Saturday night?

It was decided by the team to have one there to prevent any worrying about the loss of a Saturday evening sosche :)

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

I've never stayed in the Vane, but I have been in there. That's funny though, even with a bed to myself, I couldn't get to sleep at the Ibis!

I'm up for a meal wherever the majority are.

When was that decided? I see there are details in the first post, but I swear that wasn't there when it was originally posted, and I see it's been edited a couple of days later, so I assume it was an afterthought? I swear there were no plans for either accommodation or an evening meal, given that, after all, this is a one day meet.

I've now got a non-refundable room at the Ibis, about as far from Towers as the Vane but in the opposite direction, so seems I'll be missing out on the planned evening sosche (of this one day meet), unless I want to spend more petrol money (which on top of an already 350+ mile round trip isn't desirable).

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

It was posted on page 2 of this topic, 2 days ago, after some people expressed concerns about the lack of 2nd day and accomodation.

Whilst the team review feedback on how meets are going to happen this year we decided to advise the Weathervane as an accomodation option.

NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

...after having previously expressly advised that there was no accommodation option. Great.

I don't want to sound bitter, as I do appreciate that it can't be easy to organise meets, and that not everyone can be pleased, but it does strike me that there have never been issues like this in past years.

Having paid close attention to the topic when originally posted, and having absorbed the details, I've based plans off what was originally posted, and am now missing out on evening activities. Yes, I can be blamed for not re-checking the whole thread before making arrangements, but say I'd not booked my room an hour ago, but rather when this thread was initially created? I'd be in the same position now.

Once meet details are posted, they should be more or less set.

(This is all ignoring the point I've been trying hard to avoid, which is that this one day meet is somewhat eclipsed in popularity by a large non-TST-centric two-day meet the following weekend, which I might have liked to have attended, but I kept the original weekend free for the planned TST meet, as opposed to the following weekend free. This seems to be happening increasingly, like Caribbean Beach Party being replaced somewhat by a similar meet before the Christmas period).

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

Realised, now that I can't stay over as I have to be somewhere Sunday morning, but will be up for a meal afterwards. Vane is on my way home, but happy to go elsewhere towards Uttox way or wherever if need be, providing its not a massive detour. :)

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

I'd just like to thank the team for actually listening to the majority.

People complained about two day meets, they changed some of them to one day meets with an optional second day. People complained about everyone making different accommodation plans, they suggested centralised accommodation with the option of an evening meal.

Most of us are adults here, so why are there so many people who require everything planned for them? If you want to visit a park on a different day, then organise it and get people together. If you want to stay in a different hotel, then organise it and get people together. If you want a meal somewhere, then organise it and get people together.

Believe it or not, the team have lives too. I don't see why members are expecting them to jump through impossible hoops to suit every individual. There is a meet 'calendar', this isn't just one meet for the entire year. I'm sure that there's at least one meet this year that suits everyone's individual requirements, so perhaps it's time that people stop nitpicking and realise that there are hundreds of people to please, not just one.

Re: NEXT MEET: TST Half Term: Saturday, 15th February 2014

This should clear everything up if you would like to visit another day then visit, buy an hotel room and don't go mental

The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey, by Aesop

A man and his son were once going with their donkey to market. As they were walking along by his side a countryman passed them and said, "You fools, what is a donkey for but to ride upon?" So the man put the boy on the donkey, and they went on their way.

But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said, "See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."
So the man ordered his boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other, "Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along."

Well, the man didn't know what to do, but at last he took his boy up before him on the donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passersby began to jeer and point at them. The man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at.
The men said, "Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yours -- you and your hulking son?"

The man and boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, until at last they cut down a pole, tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them until they came to a bridge, when the donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the donkey fell over the bridge, and his forefeet being tied together, he was drowned.

Try to please everyone, and you will please no one

We don't try to please everyone, we just try new things.
