Energy transferred to the stalled train is a momentum issue, not kinetic energy as they were saying. The stalled train wasn't moving so had 0 kinetic energy. As long as they literally did mean the kinetic energy involved, it really is that simple.
There are a few files on the HSE website that may be of interest to some.
http://press.hse.gov.uk/2016/alton-towers-owners-fined-over-smiler-crash/ (zip file is at the bottom of the page)
One of them is an 'expert witness report' which details every event that happened. The other is the full...
As they are talking about the energy of the crash I've only used the good old E = 0.5mv^2. I'm sure you could do it yourself using their 90mph and 1500kg car. It's the speed of the Smiler trains that is up for debate, however I still think they've overestimated.
I could be wrong but didn't they say it was the equivalent energy to a 90mph crash? That's an easy one to work out if they are correct, all you need are the numbers for the velocity and masses of the train/'family car'.
EDIT - A quick search says they reckon the family car is 1500kg
A bit of...
Regarding the car crash speed figure, I've written a short (and very poorly done) python script to calculate train speed/weight or car speed/weight for whatever variables you want to give it. If anyone knows the mass of the infinity trains (ish) and the mass of your average family car I'd be...
Well I know that my phone certainly gets hot when plugged in and playing video, so I could imagine that overheating phones would be an issue, particularly in the black and unventilated cases!
Let's be honest though, it's not like the are in a financial position to salvage as much from the old trains as possible. Maybe the new train won't rattle quite so much?
I feel like I have a slight opposite opinion on restraints here! Being on the slim side I've never had an issue with The Smiler's restrains. They seem to have just the right shape to be comfortable on me without crushing. Saying that, I'm 99% sure if Flamingo Land had a eurofighter or similar...
How dare you!?
Having never been on a floorless coaster I don't exactly know what a conversion would do to Oblivion in terms of ride experience. However, I do know that despite the duration it is a great ride that frankly doesn't need messing with. Perhaps a spruce up around the queue/station...
What if it's just a normal ride?
Also, I never went on the flume. Never the right weather on any visits really, so I cant say I'll miss it particularly much...
Much appreciated. Robb Alvey is one truly obnoxious man who doesn't deserve our views!
Regardless of how the plans look, the POV makes it seem like it will be quite the coaster, even if it isn't the biggest in the world! I've never understood everyone having problems with how small it is, even...
