ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

I just thought of a good analogy to explain why those with really long credits lists shouldn't have their votes counted more than those with short lists... Let's say that you've only seen two Hitchcock films: Vertigo and Psycho. How other polls work: "What's the best Hitchcock film?" You can see...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

I hear ya. My personal top ten wood was well-represented in the top 25 (although my #1 barely made the top 50) but holy crap, my top ten steel is pretty much nonexistent in the top 25. Only two of my top ten made it in. Several of my top ten steel didn't even make the top 100!

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

This was my thinking as well when we did the first poll in 2017. HOWEVER, this point is only really valid when a poll asks (basically) "what are your favourite coasters" - this is how the GTAs work, as well as lots of other polls out there. If that's how you approach it, then ABSOLUTELY the...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

YES. The 2017 poll used total win percentages, but beginning with 2018 we switched to a direct pairs percentage Hawker clone in order to keep people with very long lists from having undue influence on the results.

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

No, this is exactly the same. Have a look at Lightning Rod. It shows 182 PAIR WINS, not total wins on each ballot. That means that it won (had more wins than losses) against 182 other coasters. It lost to Fjord Flying Dragon and Python in Bamboo Forest (each with only one mutual rider) and tied...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

Looking at our Top 25, the only tie (using Hawker's 2-decimal rounding) would be Dauling Dragon/ Mystic Timbers - and the H2H would've kept them in the same order. On the steel side, only Iron Rattler (13) vs Superman (14) would've generated a tie and those would also have kept their current...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

Hawker used total win percentage, then used head-to-head ONLY to break a tie. His calculations only went two decimal places, which would've resulted in a few ties in our results (although he presented those as "0.9934" where we take the same result and show "99.34"). But other than ties, the...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

The results were quite interesting this year, especially on steel. Keep in mind that the rankings are based on more than just the head-to-head for each pair... lemme explain: The win percentage can be summed up like this: When this coaster was pitted against every other coaster on the list, what...

    ElloCoaster poll needs photos!

Happy New Year to everyone! I've run preliminary results on the ElloCoaster poll and I'm currently writing the results pages. I realize that the steel coaster top 25 list is chock full of coasters that I don't have photos of. I have a dilemma: I'm not the kind of guy who will just steal...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

When the poll was done with text ballots, I was using a tabulation program that I wrote after teaching myself how to code. It was crude at best, but it worked. In the second year, Grant Barker came on board to take over the coding bit. He improved it (on our end - stuff the voter doesn't see)...

Careful... you know how crazy busy things can get in December, what with the holidaze and all of the end-of-the-year things that need to be done. I can't tell you how many emails I get in January when the results come out that amount to "OH NO!!! I put this off, then I forgot to do it" or "I put...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

Ballots are coming in... half of the voters so far live outside the USA. Of the coasters that operated in 2019, the average voter so far has ridden 35 wood and 147 steel.

YES, you can use any spreadsheet program. There are specific instructions on the site for folks using Google Sheets (either desktop or mobile). You can also use Open Office (free) or Numbers (if you're on a Mac). Just download the ballot, put it in your Google Drive, and open it in Google...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

That's completely valid. The way the tabulation program will see this is: "This voter preferred Steel Vengeance over every other steel coaster that he rode." "This voter preferred Maverick to every coaster he rode with the exception of Steel Vengeance." "This voter rode a bunch of other...

ElloCoaster Poll is live again, this time including STEEL

Definitely look at the group ranking instructions. I filled out my rankings up to around 40 or so on the steel ballot and then just went line-by-line down the rest and ranked everything else 100, 200, 300 etc down to 600. Those rankings were basically: 100: I'd ride this every visit to the...

    2018 Wood Coaster Poll

It's that time again! The 2nd annual ElloCoaster Wood Coaster Poll is up and running. It's a Mitch Hawker-style poll, so the results won't be skewed toward the US like most polls. You can see results of last year's inaugural poll and pick up a 2018 ballot on ElloCoaster...

    Wood Coaster Poll 2017

The things that struck me about the TPR poll is that they're combining wood and steel into the same list - which I think is a mistake, but that's just my opinion - and something that Alvey said somewhere in the middle of the thread when someone asked why a particular coaster wasn't included in...
