Ah right; thanks for the clarification @rob666! I thought it sounded strange that they would use land outside of the park!

I think I recall this from the 1995 park map?

David Cam has spoken about the “Even Bigger One” on his historical tours in the past, going as far as to say it was a definite plan at one point, with all the hard work in terms of permissions for crossing public highways, tram tracks etc looked into, visuals drawn up and a lot of excitement behind it. But that was as far as it ever went. A drawing and some research.

That's from the 1995 map, but it's on every WGT era map in some form from the mid 1990s onwards. For years on various forums it was posted as "proof" that a ride was going to be built that went into the sea on a new pier.

I'll never forget innocently enquiring to a Swamp Buggies ride operator as to whether he had any intel on future additions to the park, and him revealing that they "were building some Superman thing what's gonna have yer strapped in and t***ing off over t'Prom."

    Still waiting!

@Plastic Person Haha! Keith Allen once told me he that when rumours were rife about the Superman ride out of the Dome and across the road, he would on occasion find another member of staff, stand with them and point toward the horizon, pretending to be in the depths of a conversation, just to keep us on our toes.

    Great days. Great people.

By “Superman ride”, were they referring to a Reverse Freefall Coaster like Escape from Krypton?

I thought as much; thanks for the clarification @Rick! One does have to wonder what Blackpool would be like with a ride like that in it...

The Pleasure Beach Wikipedia page makes me cross, what a load of drivel... I will change some stuff, but anyone else please, do your worst - it'll be better than what is there!

"Vikingar - Previously closed in 1939, Reopened In 1979, renamed Vikingar in 2000, followed by the opening of Valhalla, permanently closed in 2004."

When did Vikingar actually open then @Rick, as I thought that those water chute rides were quite old?

Also, did any of you who rode it count Vikingar as a roller coaster? As I’ve heard of some people who do, but it’s not on RCDB. I think it may fall into a similar grey area to the Ghost Train, potentially.

It had rolling and it had coasting, but it was definitely a water ride not a credit for me!

My favourite memory of it was the old ops that used to pull the same trick over and over, and 9 times out of 10 it worked! The exit was a bridge that went over the splashdown, but there weren't that many boats so you could get over without getting caught. Unless the friendly op gave you a shout that you'd dropped something on your way over so you stop in just the right spot to drenched!

Original water chute operated 1907 to 1939. The later water chute which ended up named Vikingar opened 1979 and closed 2003.
Edit: I know I’m not Rick but had the dates handy so replied anyway

Quite - my annoyance was more that it was being suggested the original water chute and the 1979 ride (from Belle Vue) were the same when they were not - not even close.
