Chris Moyles is to leave the Radio 1 breakfast show at the end of September.

The 38-year-old has been presenting the show since 2004 and will be replaced by one of the station's current specialist DJs, Nick Grimshaw.

Announcing the news, he said: "We're off. I wanted to let you know. A couple more months of us, then it's someone else's turn. Thank you for listening."

Chris Moyles is contracted at Radio 1 until New Year 2014 after signing a new two and a half year deal last July.

There's been pressure on the new Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper to make the station's audience younger.

In June, the BBC's governing body - the Trust - found that Radio 1 still needed to attract more people under 30 years old.

That followed a review in 2009 which said Radio 1 should focus on serving 15 to 29-year-olds.

Ben Cooper said: "I'd like to thank Chris. Quite simply he's been the most successful breakfast show host in Radio 1 history.

"He's done it for more than eight and half years and he's been fantastic."

Quite gutted about this, to be honest. Whilst I understand why many hate him, I still find the Chris Moyles show to be one of the only genuinely funny things on radio. I've tried listening to other breakfast shows, but none come close to being as good. It's also disappointing to hear Nick Grimshaw is the one replacing him - I've never really been a fan of him, he's one of those DJs that the rest of Radio One hype up beyond belief, but doesn't have much personality (Fearne Cotton is another that falls into this category).

Scott Mills is now the only worthwile DJ on Radio One...wonder how long he'll last now :/

Hooray! Can't stand his show so great news!

I always enjoyed Moyles though he was true marmite radio... Not sure whether Grimmy is simply good enough for breakfast though. He'll probably be warming the seat up for Greg James, but he could be a big surprise!

I was thinking the other day he's surely getting too old for them now. He's approaching Radio 2 age :p

He was starting to act like a caricature of his former self anyway and hasn't been funny for the last couple of years but that's a testament to all of Radio 1, which is dire these days.

Bye bye big Chris.

Meh, not going to miss him personally. I never really cared for him or his show. I only ever really listen to Radio 1 if Greg James is on any more, and even then it's rare.

He seems like a funny guy but frankly give me Radio 3 any day of the week, even if only down to the horrendous music they repeat on Radio 1.

Well Chris, it's been a good run. 10 years. But now your probably off to Radio 2. I wonder if the timing now also involves the recent "late-paying" scandal. Yes I believe he is too old, but I will miss the team and I do hope some of them continue to refuge on Scott Mills' show. Grimmy is funny but will never replicate Chris' humour but at least play more music! I'm happy for this but also unhappy. Have a good last few years Chris! He's only funny on his quiz night to be honest.

he is a great entertainer and a very very good radio DJ but its pretty fitting for him to leave now. the show is starting to get a little stale IMO
however he really went down in my books after his little diva paddy on air when there was a pay mix up. mabye he will concentrate on his TV career *rolls over in fits of laughter"

He's great entertainment and most of what he says is set to cause the issues, hope he has another great national show I can follow to be honest.

just listened to the embedded audio of the moyles telling his listeners. is it me or does it have an undertone of i'm telling you this now so you have time to complain?

It's about time. My parents had his show on in the car last week and never have I heard such radio drivel in all my life. I think he played about one song in two hours!

Are there really people who find it humourous listening to this idiot talk about his breakfast for half an hour?!

Goodbye.

Theres a reason they call it a talk show not radio show, but then again unless your a regular listener you tend not to get it.

Who is this Chris Moyles people speak of?

OHH the talent-less one who drivvles on about nothing and sends me to sleep whilst driving...

I don't care if it makes me old i will listen to Chris Evans on radio 2 thankyouplease :)

I like Chris Moyles and have really enjoyed his show.
I'm quite happy that Nick Grimshaw is taking over the helm rather than Scott Mills or Greg James, but will probably listen less, mainly due to the fact that I'm not really so keen on Radio 1's daytime playlists.
My favourite days of a Radio One were a few years ago with the line up of Chris Moyles, Jo Whiley, Edith Bowman and Zane Lowe. I could listen all day and aside from Moyles, I got a sense that the DJ's truly loved music and had passion. Don't really get that from any of the current daytime line up apart from Fearne to an extent.
All that said, I am now WAY past their target market so perhaps it's time to move on!

Personally I liked him but yeah I think it's time for radio 2

Soooo nick grimshaw on radio 1, how good does moyles seem now

He's still fairly new, but he has improved since taking over, albeit slightly. I certainly like him more than I expected. Not as funny as Chris Moyles though.

Don't even bother listening to the drivel. Heard 5 minutes of it the other day; he was playing "I Created Disco" by Calvin Harris, from his first album - and was simply deriding it saying it was boring and awful in a really patronising manner. Pity he doesn't realise that near enough every track he plays every morning is far worse.
