Towers have implemented a new digital photos system this seaon, which uses facial recogition sofware to automatically add users' photos to their online photo gallery.
Has anyone used it, and if so it's it worth the money? I'm thinking of getting one for my upcomong visit.

This was pulled from sale a couple of days after it launched because it didn’t work.

Is it available again now? It’s still not possible to purchase it online.

Oh wait, yeah it's not possible to purchase atm. They must be having major problems with it then.

Face recognition is mostly the eyes so it can work!

I remember the Your Day Videos, used to wear an electronic wrist band and wave the arm as you pass the sensors on rides as well as various points around the park. This would add you to an on ride video of your day out. I still have the DVD video.

That was basically Disney magic band wasn't it?

From what I've been told even Disney do face recognition now

I'm sure someone here knows but I'm sure it's basically the same long range RFID tech behind both. (Yes I knownamgic band also does short)

Yep Disney started using Bluetooth in the magic bands for photos but have moved on to using facial recognition too.

YourDay was great at the time but their business model relied on people picking up a band at the beginning of the day, visiting the store and seeing the preview of the video and then deciding to buy.

Technology and the way people do things has moved on and with the rise in App use Disney can now just show you the photos/videos of yourself in their App with the option to purchase (if you don’t already have a package including them).

I wonder how many people are disappointed to receive images of someone else as oppose to them? Happened a lot with the old key the number in system, let alone relying on face recognition.

A fair bit from what I saw, but they did include a not me button.

I think part of the issue is SAW.
Billy is apparently a 32 year old male according to their face recognition system

I’m guessing that’s why Alton Towers have shelved it for now.
I haven’t read too much on it at Disney but the few bits I have seen I think it works okay and you only get a couple of erroneous photos. on our last Disney visit in 2016 we got photos of ourselves linked fine from MagicBands and none of anyone else.

Has Disney started using face recognition for ORP? I thought it was done via the magic bands.

I thought they were but having googled I’m not sure they are and the few reports are people that confused it with the magic band link. Apparently they do use face recognition for photos on the cruise line though.

They did trial face recognition for park entry very recently.

Am 99% sure I've read that Disney are going to roll out a new App for mobile phones with NFC capability in Florida that will replace the MagicBands. If you don't have a mobile with NFC capability & are staying on-site (so have paid a lot!) they'll provide you with a NFC enabled admission card for you r park admissions / room access etc. If you still want MagicBands, they will be at a cost (whereas they used to be free if you stayed on-site).

This does beg the question of mobile phones on water rides... we got drenched on the Kali River Rapids - at least the MagicBands are 100% waterproof.

I wouldn't worry unless you have an older phone and even then it should be fine as long you don't try to charge before it dries out. Most phones are IP67/IP68 rated even if they never applied for the certification to save pennies. (Looks at you OnePlus!).

I'd be more concerned about the NFC card needing replacing after spending all day in your pocket with your phone. We've all lost a hotel or keycard or two to that right? You could potentially use an NFC reader and write the NFC to a smart watch or your own NFC wristband, ring or any wearable tech to make your own cut-price magic band.
Edit: turns out this isn't possible unless you have the same chip type and it's registered to a Disney DB, boo!

We went to Sanrio Puroland that uses face recognition tech on the mymeroad drive. Being the only white people we saw that day, we thought how could this go wrong. Turns out quite badly, apparently we're an Asian family of 5 and had to manually search for ourselves :tearsofjoy:

They already have set it up so NFC park tickets can be added to Apple Wallet. Walt Disney World MagicMobile Service | Walt Disney World Resort

They are also using long-range Bluetooth on phones for ride photos. So yes not sure what that means for Kali Rapids and photos. But a zip lock bag is usually enough for a phone and put everything else in a locker.

Most face recognition systems have the white cis male engineer bias, unless you clearly fit that description it's going to have issues (think back to the racist soap dispenser)
