The Call of Duty Topic

After spending the evening playing Black Ops 2 which was released yesterday, I wanted to talk about the game on these forums, but I soon realised there wasn't actually a thread dedicated to this famous first person shooter series.

So here it is, a place to discuss the Call of Duty franchise.

In my opinion Black Ops 2 feels fresh, bringing a new dimension to various aspects of the series.
The new zombie mode 'Tranzit' is by far my favourite part so far, as four regular survival zombie maps are joined together to create a large, mysterious map which can be navigated using a bus or by foot, whilst trying to discover the many secrets it has in store for us, whilst of course, surviving endless hoardes of the undead.
I do believe, however, that this should be the end of Call of Duty, at least for the near future. With a high 9.3 IGN rating, now would be the perfect opportunity to put the franchise to rest.
Will this happen however? Unlikely, due to the huge amount of money the games manage to pull in.

What are your thoughts?

MW4 is already in development isn't it? :p

I enjoy the game a lot, although its made more fun by competing with friends who also play... The new Black Ops 2 is a fantastic step forward for the series, with the most accomplished Zombies mode yet, a revitalised online offering and a campaign mode with new elements (such as some RTS levels). The fact the series is set in the near future also provides a sci-if element to the mix which certainly takes the game to a new level!

I'm thoroughly enjoying myself at the moment... Up to level 25 online ;)

To be honest Eddie made the most constructive, in depth and psychologically accurate representation of this specific franchise of video games, applause to you good sir! :)

Call of duty indeed "sucks balls" :D

I've been playing it, and found that the online matches MW2's (which I class as the best) while the Zombies beats all others. TranZit is insane, and I've spent a good portion of time playing it with some friends. I'll give it some time before judging it better, but it's shaped up to be one of the best games in the franchise.

Treyarch are indisputably the masters of COD. World at War, Black Ops and now Black Ops II are probably (even just on first impressions) the best 3 COD's of the last 5 years. They're generally well balanced and avoid the problems with Infinity Ward games whereby killstreaks are massively overpowered.

Also, there's Zombies. Not half bad when people would probably buy the game at full price even without the single player or multiplayer modes in it at all ;)

In my opinion, Call of duty is what defines generic FPS game. The multiplayer is bland and not that fun compared to other games. In some cases, it just rips off other games (MW3 stole Infected from Halo). The only reason I got Black Ops was for zombies which is in my opinion, the best aspect of the game.
The storyline is terrible in nearly every game though.

I'd honestly rather spend my £40 on stamp collecting than buy this crap game. ;)

Seriously though, In my opinion every one of these game is basically the exact same, minus the predictable storyline and locations.

I'm really not a 'gamer', but Call Of Duty 4 was amazing, about as perfect as a modern game can be. Since then as far as I can tell it's just become a cash-in. Release the same game every year with some new maps and that's basically it.

Can I correct you, CoD is what defines mms games not fps. Mms is modern military shooters, its unfair to have CoD an example of fps when there are far more team based, tactical, deeper and harder.

Most of these good fps games are actually found on PC because the console is oversaturated with games like CoD due to its success.

Just me nit picking! :p

Haha, I'll presume you're being both Sarcastic and Serious towards me, Matt :p

But the franchise does suck. Although I'll admit that I enjoyed the 4th and 5th Games due to their campaigns, multiplayers and Zombies for the latter, the franchise has now become a way for Activision to make money. These days the campaigns are too short and predictable and hardly change the plot, and Multipayer is just the same thing over and over again.

The only game franchise I find worse is Fifa and all the other sports games

I'm tempted to pick this up for Wii U if I get one near launch. From what I've heard, it is good, but after Modern Warfare 3 I'm not particularly excited for it.

Every year I say people who buy Call Of Duty, FIFA, Guitar Hero, Just Dance, or any other game which gets rereleased every year with almost no changes are sheep, idiots, and slaves to commercialism...

Then buy Football Manager.

Oops.

Just because I enjoy CoD and Fifa doesn't make me a sheep... I equally enjoy playing plenty of other games that aren't bought by the bucketload.

For those naysayers who think this has become a cash cow though, you're right.. But give this new one a chance. It's different enough to make it a bit of a revolution in terms of CoD games. The single player uses a more open-ended mission format with branching stories and real time strategy elements thrown in. Multiplayer has been improved once more and zombies is more expansive than ever.

In fact, plenty of the 'sheep' are saying its crap - when in fact it's actually evolved for the better.

Before a couple of weeks ago, I was firmly in the "not going to waste my money on another CoD game" etc. However, it's now been changed to "not going to waste my money on another Infinity Ward CoD game".

When looking into Black Ops 2, I stumbled across the plans for a huge, open zombie map- and was obviously intrigued. I decided to pre-order it. After playing it for a couple of hours, I have to say, it's easily the best zombie experience Treyarch have made by a long, long way. It's brought many new elements in, and kept a few old things, but the main thing is it's more of a story now, and a caters lot, lot more playing styles- unlike the "hoarding" of Kino. The bus is a very interesting feature, and is done very well indeed.

Onto the the rest of the game. I've not started the campaign, and probably won't for some time, but I've heard good things about it. The multiplayer is much improved upon the Infinity Ward games. The maps are, mostly new, but with a couple of references to old favourites from CoD4 (mainly Hijacked with the map with a boat on CoD4).

Now, I'll strongly disagree with the saying "they're just trying to make money", because of course it's true with every game ever made. All sequels to everything are just to make money. Even Halo 4- which really shouldn't have tried to bring back a finished trilogy- with ODST and Reach as well, have clearly tried to rake in money, so please stop suggesting it's just CoD. And even then, it's clear, that unlike IW, Treyarch have actually tried to change the game. All the MW games have just been a map-pack, whilst Treyarch's games have brought in several major points into each game.

It's clear that everyone's just jumping on the "CoD's mainstream and popular, lets hate it, and say it's a rubbish game which is just trying to reel in money" bandwagon. It's just pathetic.

And before you try to argue back, I was in that position a couple of weeks ago as well. Even now, I don't think they are the best games (SSX3 all the way), but who cares. They provide you with hours of fun, and what's wrong with enjoying yourself. Even if you can't stand the game, then why try and ruin the enjoyment of the millions who don't care if the game is barely different from the last, and just want some fun.

I agree with this.

It used to be the other way round. Call of Duty 2 was an excellent game, but Treyarch's follow up, Call of Duty 3, is terrible. Thankfully, they seem to have learned from that - World at War was just plain fun, and the original Black Ops had a rather good plot, as well as loads of other features. Compared to the Modern Warfare series, which has just stayed the same since 2007. The first one was good, but as the games went on the story mode became more and more stupid, and the multiplayer less accessible to those who don't dedicate their lives to it. Modern Warfare 3 was the worst yet, and didn't even attempt to do anything special. Not that it had to, of course.

Actually, no. I dislike Cod, I was being very serious!

more then anything I hate it's priced at £40 but games that give a similar experience or better, can cost around half... they also have the gaul to charge RRP £40 on PC... when every other triple A titles start at £30 RRP or £35 RRP on steam. The gun play is also the worst I've seen of any big release... wheres the recoil! WHERE! :O
