The Smiler - perspective paintings?

you know the illusion images painted around The Smiler site, which are only legible from a certain angle? Does anyone know what this technique is called?

I believe it is somehting along the lines of "cheap theming".

Sorry I couldn't resist that one! I'm not sure what the technique is actually called but someone else may be able to help you.

Do you mean the images such as the distorted Smiler face on the side of the building?

Yep, @Rollercoasters4Life is correct - the technical term for it is anamorphosis. Also referred to as perspective-localised art. A good article on it, and featuring some stunning examples of it can be found here.

The blue check one is incredible but that lens thing WOW! Even from the photos I cannot figure out how that works.

And instead of putting the ones in the queue people can't really see anyway, why didn't they do a giant smile on the staircase???

Imagine having to walk "through" that would have been awesome!

Yeah, pretty sure they put an anamorphic floor on a lift somewhere and filmed people going into it for the marketing video.
