TowersStreet Planet Coaster Speed Build Contest 2022/23: Winners Declared (contest ended 18th March)

I now have a Round 3 submission! This was a tough round, and it was difficult to make an overly realistic ride that was particularly substantial. Nonetheless, I have to say that I'm personally quite pleased with what I managed to get out of the constraints, if I do say so myself! Say hello to... Top Thrill Dragster II:

So, that's Top Thrill Dragster II, my Round 3 submission! I do apologise, as I'm aware that it might be a bit too intense in places... it was surprisingly difficult to build fast corners within the plot that weren't obscenely forceful. I'm aware that TTD II probably isn't my best submission ever for that reason. I hope you still like it, however!

Apologies for my previous error in reading the brief. I have been back to my layout and made alterations to bring it back under 5000ft.

Intamin LSM Launch Coaster
Top Speed - 100mph
Length - 4894ft
Height - 301ft
Duration - 74.5s

Excellent submission @Connor98! That's an excellent-looking layout, with some fun looking elements and surprising airtime!

Also, don't worry about having misinterpreted the brief the first time round; it's an easily made mistake!

Excellent submission @RicketyCricket! That layout has some great airtime pops, as well as some impressive custom inversions and brilliant smoothness throughout!
Lacking a bit of inspiration this week but here we go anyway.

Great submission @Matt.GC! You've gotten a surprising amount out of the length, and your layout looks both smooth and great fun!

While I’m here, let me just remind everyone (apologies for my lateness… I usually intend for these reminders to be halfway) that 2 days remain for you to build your Round 3 submission and vote for your Round 2 favourites.

I’ve had 7 submissions out of a potential 12 so far, including my own. If you would like a deadline extension for Round 3, please notify me before the deadline and I would be happy to facilitate one for you. If you do not get into contact with me before the deadline, I will assume that you are happy forfeiting this round and move on.

If you have not voted for your Round 2 favourites yet, here is the link to the Google Form so that you can vote if you would like to do so: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSenHmOJ_hZbGQzG3OcQogSmDrWA2pwJT6xuLBfcAClhNDt6ZA/viewform

In a not-so-shocking turn of events, Cedar Point decided that re-imagining Top Thrill Dragster would be a fantastic time to take a new world record. The once world's tallest & fastest rollercoaster now features the world's tallest loop! (by a considerable amount as well (350ft lol))

Name: Sky Fighter
Type: Mack launched coaster refurbishment overhaul thing
Length: 4943ft
Height: 420ft
Top speed: 118mph
Inversions: 2
Airtime: 6 (6.4s)

Cool submission @Archermav! The big loop looks really cool, and the ride also has some great looking airtime moments in there!

Well done, everybody! Now let's get onto Round 3 voting...
Round 3 Voting Stage
We have finished the building stage for Round 3, therefore the voting stage must now begin!

Please vote for your Round 3 favourites via this Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScWIw5_uqR6Z7CqHOhQUzp4EmBW0gMakgTO_ExD_IRQy5_kfw/viewform

Let me just recap a few things about voting, if you need a reminder.
  • If you're not clear on how I'd like you to vote; please pick your top 5 track layouts and rank them in order of preference from #1 to #5. If you give a player a particular ranking, the points allocated are as follows; #1 ranking = 5pts, #2 ranking = 4pts, #3 ranking = 3pts, #4 ranking = 2pts, #5 ranking = 1pt.
  • You will also receive the opportunity to nominate a submission for Realism or Originality if you wish. Unlike last year, these nominations are not compulsory; you can award them if you wish, but you do not have to nominate anyone for Realism or Originality. Each Realism or Originality nomination a player gets will grant them 1 Realism point or 1 Originality point.
  • Please only fill out this form once. I have not mandated this within the form itself, but I'm trusting you all here.
  • Please do not vote for yourself. I know that there is no way I can mandate this, but I trust you not to. Please can I request that you only nominate submissions that are not your own.
  • Please judge submissions on track layout only. This is a coaster layout building contest; theming is pretty much irrelevant here.
  • I know that this form of voting is a lot more anonymous than the voting process was in the last contest. If you would like to add a slightly more personal touch, you can still post a comment in this thread indicating your top 5 choices, as well as any Realism or Originality nominations, like you did last year if you would like to. However, can I please request that the Google Form be your first port of call for voting; I will only count votes cast within the Google Form, as if you post in this thread, I wouldn't like to assume whether you've already voted in the Google Form or not. Post your choices in the thread by all means, but please make sure that you log your votes within the Google Form first, as the votes within the Google Form are the votes I'll be counting.
Here are the submissions from Round 3, so that you know what you're voting for:
  • Top Thrill Stuntplane, an Intamin Impulse Coaster by @Thameslink Rail:
  • Top Thrill Dragster II, an Intamin LSM Launch Coaster by @Matt N:
  • Unnamed Intamin LSM Launch Coaster by @Connor98:
  • Top Drag Thrillster, a B&M Wing Coaster by @Poisson:
  • Top Thrill Slagster, a Premier Rides Launch Coaster by @RicketyCricket:
  • Unnamed RMC T-Rex by @Burbs:
  • Ron Jeremy's Top Thrill PornStar, an Intamin launch coaster by @Matt.GC:
  • Sky Fighter, a Mack Rides Launch Coaster by @Archermav:

Voting for Round 3 will close on Friday 2nd December 2022 at 11:59pm.

Now we've covered voting for Round 3, let's move on to revealing Round 4!
Round 4 Building Stage
As another week goes by, another round must be unleashed. With that in mind, I think it's about time we sank our teeth into Round 4! The Round 4 brief is... Colossus Reloaded at Thorpe Park!

The context is as follows:
When photos recently emerged of Colossus at Thorpe Park missing track from its quad heartline roll, everyone leapt onto the bandwagon of a Taziker retrack. However, the park is going a lot further than that in reality... given how Sik at Flamingo Land now eclipses Colossus in most conceivable ways, Thorpe Park wants to completely replace Colossus with a newer version fit for the 2020s. A Colossus 2.0, if you will. But this isn't simply an Intamin 10 Inversion Coaster Rev B like Sik, oh no... the park has enlisted you to completely revitalise the Colossus concept for the 2020s. Merely matching Sik simply won't do in this case; Thorpe Park wants to make Colossus truly stand out once again. Those all-important inversions need to remain a core element of the ride, and with a height record breaker soon to be located nearby, Thorpe Park doesn't want the coaster to be too tall either. How will you revitalise the power of 10 for the 2020s? Show us!

The constraints are as follows:
  • Maximum Footprint 256m*84m (840ft*276ft)
  • Minimum of 10 Inversions
  • Maximum Height 200ft/61m
For some idea, this is the area of Thorpe Park we're working within (it's circled in black and labelled "Colossus"... sorry for my slightly crude drawing):
Colossus-Plot.png

I would recommend using Scenario Editor to apply the footprint constraints if you are on PC. As per usual, I have created a Steam Workshop park with the constraints applied that I would be happy for you to download if you struggle to design a scenario yourself: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2892466610

As for console users, I would recommend setting out the footprint constraints using wall pieces or path pieces to build yourself an "area" to work within. I know it's not ideal, but it's sadly the best I can offer given that neither Scenario Editor nor Steam Workshop are seemingly available on console... sorry for the inconvenience, folks.

As for how to determine your ride height, please use Terrain Relative height markers (the option denoted by the picture of a mountain).

As for what you need to do to submit; please build your submission, film a POV and off-ride shots, and post them in this thread. You can do a brief description of what your ride is if you wish. If you have any issues with uploading your video(s), please don't hesitate to PM me.

May I once again emphasise that this is a coaster layout building contest. By all means add some light theming and landscaping if you wish, but the coaster layout should ideally be the focus. Quality of coaster layout is pretty much the be all and end all here; heavy theming won't gain you any points, and no theming won't lose you any points.

The Round 4 submission deadline is Friday 2nd December 2022 at 11:59pm. If you struggle for time and would like me to extend the deadline, please PM me or request an extension in this thread before the deadline. I would be more than happy to facilitate an extension for you if you would like one. If you do not make contact with me and ask for an extension, I will assume that you are happy to forfeit this round and move on after the posted deadline.

OK, then; I think that's all I need to cover for Week 4! If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Good luck with Week 4, everybody... get building for Round 4 and voting for Round 3, folks!

Well, folks, I have a Round 4 submission ready for display! Say hello to... Heptadecagonia, a Gerstlauer Infinity Coaster! The name is derived from heptadecagon, which is a 17-sided shape… and that’s because I’ve built a 17 inversion coaster! I fancied breaking the inversion record for this one, and John Wardley always said that breaking it by simply 1 or 2 is never enough, so 17 it is! Here are some photos, as well as a video of the ride:
Heptadecagonia-Entrance.png

Heptadecagonia-Layout-Overview.png

The stats are as follows:
  • Name: Heptadecagonia
  • Manufacturer: Gerstlauer
  • Model: Infinity Coaster (Custom)
  • Height: 171ft/52m
  • Speed: 65mph/105kph
  • Length: 7,063ft/2,153m
  • Inversions: 17
  • Airtime Moments: 9
  • Maximum Positive G-Force: 5.2G (overall), 5.1G (heatmap)
  • Maximum Negative G-Force: -1.9G (overall), -1.4G (heatmap)

  • Throughput: 1,155pph (~72 trains per hour, 1 train every ~50s)
If you'd like to play with Heptadecagonia for yourself, here's the Steam Workshop link so that you can download it: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2893605421

So that's Heptadecagonia, my Round 4 submission! I know some of the profiling is a little suspect, so I apologise for that, but I hope you like it regardless!
