"If music be the food of love, play on."

Real music is a term often used to describe the art of sound that appeals to the human ear. The history of music is a vast, magnificent and complex one that has evolved extensively over the thousands of years. Traditionally, music can be created using a variety of musical instruments, devices designed for the creation of sounds, or indeed the human voice itself. However, music can consist of any form of sound, no matter how that sound is created.

Throughout early history, music has taken on many forms. Mankind has always, since the dawn of time, been interested in the idea of noise. At some point these ideas were developed into the Elements of Music, several aspects of sound that can be used to form a piece of music. Not all of these elements were discovered at once, with different parts of the world focussing on different elements. It took hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years to perfect these features of music. This is once reason why there are so many different styles of music and so many different meanings behind it on the whole. In the European Mediaeval Period, music often focussed on a steady pitch with some use of dynamics and rhythm. Since religion was a key aspect of civilised human life at that point in time, music was usually controlled by and written for the church. In the Eastern parts of the Earth, music was constantly changing because people were finding different ways to produce sound, often coming up with strikingly different styles to that of the West. Methods of writing music had also been attempted at this point, but only very primitive techniques.

The Renaissance Period is usually considered the beginning of the evolution of sound into what we know today as music, dropping the primitive techniques of producing sound completely and becoming far more sophisticated in many aspects all around the world. It was during this time that new, more flexible musical instruments were invented and musicians began to go against the stereotypes that had been set. Music developed and progressed through time and space, bringing with it some of the most famous and intelligent musicians ever to walk the Earth. Music experienced several different periods, from the classical era to the romantic era, taking on new techniques and concepts each time. Written music also developed heavily, becoming much easier to read and sophisticated. Furthermore, the styles of music differed between countries and races of people, meaning the more man explored the world the wider his variety of music would become. Different parts of the world would heavily influence each other over time, bringing vastly different cultures together as one.

In recent decades, music has taken on a less sophisticated but more experimental and influential purpose. No longer is it associated with politics or religion; it is now a major part of the entertainment industry. What's more, the concepts of music are available for anybody of an background and taste to understand. Anybody who wishes may choose to learn a musical instrument of their choice, and may play together in loving harmony with other members of the human race to produce songs or pieces. Over the last century, many different genres and sub-genres of music have evolved, such as:

  • rock
  • classic rock
  • rock & roll
  • blues rock
  • soul rock
  • folk rock
  • psychedelic rock
  • progressive rock
  • art rock
  • punk rock
  • post-punk rock
  • hard rock
  • glam rock
  • pub rock
  • alternative rock
  • grunge rock
  • post-grunge rock
  • indie rock
  • ...and "pop".

Music also often includes emotional, themed instrumentals, similar to the music used at theme parks, except better. Examples of this technique can be found in such divisions of music as progressive rock and rock opera, as well as classical. The soundtracks to theatre productions or movies also capitalise on the concept of atmospheric music. Music can be considered the cause of many deaths, wars and revolutions. However, music can also change a person's life for the better, prompting them to explore and appreciate the meaning of life, the universe and everything. A good man once said: "Without music, life is just a long journey through a desert." Music is often considered one of the greatest achievements of the human race.
