Welcome to the second of our weekly news roundups, covering all the latest developments from both the Alton Towers Theme Park and the wider resort, in the past week!

Further changes to park retail outlets.

From opening day this year, Unit NS-T, with its small footprint, temporary appearance, and obscure location, was seemingly an ill-fated outlet: only intended to be opened on peak days, and very quickly stripped of its goods and closed down. However, as of this week the shop’s shutters are once again open, with the unit this time housing three vending machines as reported by TowersStreet on Facebook!

Meanwhile, over at the other side of the park in Dark Forest, the Rita Shop – which a few weeks ago became the victim of the latest mass budget cuts, and was closed with all its merchandise removed – reopened earlier this week, once again fully stocked (although its opening currently remains intermittent).

Don’t-Look-Downtime.

This week, Oblivion suffered several full days’ worth of downtime. While the source of the ride’s problems is not publicly known, we are pleased to announce that the ride is now fully back in operation!

In other ride related news, after years of being out of operation, or simply displaying a scrolling “RITA”, Rita’s LED scroller now finally displays the ride’s queue time, in a similar style to Air and Nemesis’s.

Sir Algenon to embark on new culinary adventure.

Exciting news which emerged this week shows that Alton Towers are to once again broaden the range of culinary options available at the Resort hotels with Sir Algenon’s Bar and Grill opening from the 24th July in the Conference Centre, offering guests the alternative of a Woodcutter’s Bar & Grill-style menu while staying over.

Big Cheques abound as £1000 Giveaway Continues!

In what is believed to be the start of “The Summer of Escapes” at Alton Towers, Instant Escape Week has continued, with lucky visitors on an assortment of attractions including Sonic Spinball, Runaway Mine Train, and Nemesis receiving oversized cheques for £1000 from the Pirates Of Mutiny Bay. This week, however, one such cheque escaped the grasp of the Marketing department, who recieved a mysterious video which had all of us at TowersStreet chuckling!

Wifi believed to be switched on!

As previously reported, The Cloud are continuing to set up for the park-wide Wifi system, with more and more transmitters appearing around the park by the week, providing a very broad coverage; the devices are fairly inconspicuous, and some have been painted in order to match their surroundings. It is believed that many transmitters have now been turned on, and that members of the public are now able to connect and post to the internet, although the park are not yet advertising the service. Meanwhile, we at TowersStreet have launched a little weekly competition on Facebook to identify the location of these transmitters; join in the fun here!
