The Orangery

The Gardens - The Orangery and Stonehenge in 2016

Also known as the Quarry Greenhouse, the Orangery is currently one of the more derelict buildings found in the Gardens at Alton Towers. Where once The Orangery would have been a full greenhouse, currently the central section of the structure is open to the elements, whilst the wings are sealed up.

It would seem that the Orangery was built around the same time as the neighbouring Conservatories in the 1820s and would likely have been a more functional greenhouse than its grand neighbour.

At one point both wings of the Orangery would have been capped with cast-iron domes to match the Conservatories, but today one of the domes is notably missing, having been lost at some point in the late 60s or early 70s. At various points since the 1950s, the Orangery has been used as both a shop and toilet block, but was derelict by the time of the most recent Historic England survey in 1985.

The building is due to be refurbished as part of the conditions for the construction of Project Horizon.
