The Cred Street Carousel was a little bit out of the ordinary, as many things at Alton Towers are, because it was a two-storey twist on the traditional fairground ride. This offered a unique experience of allowing guests not only the choice of what level they wanted to ride on, but also their method of travel.
On the lower deck guests could choose not only from traditional horses or carriages, but also from exotic animals, such as an elephant, camel, tiger or giraffe. Upstairs, there was the option of riding in tea-cup style cars, or an impressive fleet of hot air balloons.
The ride started its life at Thorpe Park as part of Carousel Kingdom in 1990, before arriving at Alton Towers in 2000 to replace Alton's ageing Crown Carousel. It did not last long at the park though. Only four years after arriving, in 2004, it spent an entire season SBNO along with the neighbouring Vintage Cars. Despite reopening during 2005, it was removed at the end of the season to make way for the Driving School in 2006.
But the Story didn't end there... whilst the fate of the Cred Street Carousel was never confirmed by the park, it would seem that it found a new home at Tivoli Friheden in Denmark. The park's Frihedskarrusellen is near identical to the Cred Street Carousel, and given that most Peter Petz carousels have bespoke layouts, it almost certainly means that this is the ride that used to operate at Alton Towers.
