Alton Towers has become the latest business to be affected by the current COVID-19 epidemic with a delay to the start of the 2020 season and the closure of the resort’s hotels.
Despite announcing earlier in the week that they were hoping to open as normal, in an official statement today the park has announced that they will not now open on Saturday 21st as planned and will remain closed until further notice. In their statement the park states:
“Further to recent updates from the Government on the response to the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, we have taken the very difficult decision to postpone the opening of Alton Towers Resort Theme Park and to close our Hotels as a precautionary measure. While we have been looking forward to welcoming visitors this weekend, we believe that this decision is the right thing to protect the health and wellbeing of our employees and guests.”
The park is following the latest advice from the government, but as we are still in the early days of the pandemic this advice is likely to continue to change, as may the eventual opening date. TowersStreet will keep you up to date with any changes as they occur, and the resort also have an official page which will include their latest information.
Some of you will have been attending our opening meet this weekend, and naturally this is now also postponed. We’ll keep you updated with potential new dates, and advise if any of our other future meets are also affected. For those who may be staying over at the resort this weekend, Alton Towers have advised that tickets purchased through to 25th April are now valid for any date after the season begins, except during the Fireworks event in November.
The hotels are also closing as precautionary measure. For those with short break bookings from now up until 25th April, the short breaks team will be in touch to provide guidance on rearranging or cancelling bookings.
