The World of David Walliams: General Discussion

The biggest problem I have with Merlin is they put all there money and time into adding a good ride but no effort into the rest of the area. Like the Nickelodeon theming is still there 22 years later. That area really still looks the same from my 1st visit in 1993 when it was the land of make believe.

I have concerns over this 'themed area'.

Walliams as an IP is probably suited around 4 to 6 years above CBeebies. Typically, children aged 6 to 12.

However, the rides in this area, Gangsta Granny aside, are of the same target as CBeebies Land...

I mean - I teach 8-9 year olds. They are too old for the driving school. Too old for the frog hopper. A carousel is of little interest.

Yet they all read Walliams... so the rides in the area are too young for the target...?

Totally agree. My 12 year old reads Walliams and has done for around 4 years, it's now more Tower Of Terror than Frog Hopper that she's interested in. The headline attraction seems borderline in the lower age bracket. A 12 year old will see it for what it is, I can't see them getting excited for it and even if they are they will no doubt be disappointed when they get off.
The only thing that really sounds any good is the recreation of the corner shop. If it's done properly.

We can only hope it will be flattened in five years :)

On a serious note - it’s not even happened yet. It’s likely to be crap, but let’s not slate them until it is confirmed as crap

Perspective fans rejoice! I've just added this corrected version of the plans from the video to the TS Gangsta Granny: The Ride page:

Also what’s everyone opinions on what the outside front will be themed like? Judging from the artwork. Will they theme it too look like the granny’s house (Easily to do with widows)? Or do you think it be a cheeky paint & random 2D items from the books sticking out?

Me personally thinks CCL is borderline tacky colourful. With not much details. We have CBBL for that. Colour great if done well. But I think it’s too much & too childish. This new theme could tone the colours down a little adding more details & come in the middle.

The entrance should have loads of curvy books (white) arching over you , as you enter. Similar too Matilda the play used with colourful boxes) Immerse yourself a little. Could also be easily implemented into buildings too. Easily done on a budget. Wasn’t CCL quite budget anyway?

I also think they might use some of Charlie and chocolate factor ride old props and refurbish them or some of the old animatronics? If you want to call them that. God knows what happen too the lifts (Elevators). That’s a waste and should be used in the future.

If the change delivers a whole land, 4D cinema, Granny ride and rethemed (Dad's Taxi?) cars, a large shop sing the old sweet shop.... AT will have pulled off a great enhancement, even if the ride is mediocre. A whole land will look great on the TV adverts for 2020.

If all they do is a bit of paint and de-weeding and just that ride, like the dungeons before it, it won't be nearly enough to excite anyone beyond summer 2020.

Yes completely agree. But that fact they erected those massive colourful arches advertising “David Williams Land” at Halloween. The title &
Advertising makes me believe too be a Retheme of the area. Just depends with budgets how far they go with this. look at wicker man surrounding area. Wasn’t that done last minute & that’s blended it in nicely. Also wasn’t the dark Forest a last minute retheme after 13? However that doesn’t give me hope. So much more can do with this. (Huge props, trees, statues, Broken mirrors & twisted theming). I’ve actually made myself less hopeful just writing this

I would presume (?) that the outside of the ride building would be themed to The Tower of London or something along those lines, since the ride is a tour of the tower. It'll probably be something completely different though :tearsofjoy:

I’ve not read the books. This makes sense.

I must admit that this was an initial concern of mine as well, but they could well have plans to add more rides gravitated more towards the older children's market in future years as the area expands.

That being said, I think Gangsta Granny could be a good all-round family ride, but I have been too tall to ride the Driving School since the age of 10, and I assume that would be the case for the other CCL rides too, so the older end of Walliams' demographic may be alienated by a number of the area's starting attractions. There might well be more in the way of non-ride attractions for this audience to experience, though, as Alton Towers have said that there are more surprises to come!

£2m - and I guess this budget includes the Walliams IP? Christ this will be ****
I would suggest that that the majority of Walliam's cut will come from the merch. I wouldn't be surprised if the ride was closer to the £1m rather than the £2m. 4 ride vehicles, and Garmendale use the term 'Great Value' way too much on their website.

Has the buyout been completed yet? Hoping the budget situation will change. This judges would have been put in place before the buyout anyway.

Can I ask where did the £2m budget source come from? It does seem low.

Yup buyout has happened and I've cashed in on my investment...which is pittance really.
