This is Towers reply on Twitter to someone asking when "announcements will begin for the ride?"

" Keep your ears to the ground!"

Here is the link: https://twitter.com/altontowers/status/805784378190217216

(Sorry I'm not very skilled in this whole embedding quotes and stuff like that!)

Don't know if that's something anyone should read to much into but intresting!
They are going to surprise everyone and it's going to be a monster!

The majority is going underground

In terms of height, the 196m merely refers to the height above sea level! The land around the lake of the flume site sits between around 180m - 187m above sea level, so the ride is going to be about 10-15 meters above the ground (around 50ft a similar height to 13). In terms of digging underground it's obviously a possibility, though categorically not deep enough to make the ride 200ft tall... Let alone 200m! ;)

As for their response on Twitter, "Keep your ears to the ground" is simply a well known/used phrase, that is that. I wouldn't read too much into it at all.

Going back to digging though, they would have to be careful with any digging in that area due to the close proximity to various water bodies, I'm sure they would rather not run the risk of another Smiler water table/drainage issue! Anyway, height isn't all that as we know all to well being fans of Towers! I know some people are already being very dismissive of this ride, but I still have faith in it. GCI's are rarely about height, it's the sharp and sudden odd directional changes they make that provide the fun/thrills. These are very hard to show/see on ariel plans and even elevations, so who knows. Besides, even the smallest of GCI's I am yet to see one that looks anything other than a fun, solid, decent coaster!

Maybe they really are digging an insanely deep tunnel, and the ride will be themed to the Kola borehole (A.K.A. "The Well to Hell").

According to the article posted above 25 jobs will be created. Excellent news, oh, apart from the fact that they just laid a bunch of people off................ ;)

Edit - and yeah, they probably will dig down a little to give the ride a bit more speed etc but it still doesn't take away the fact that the whole thing could have been better, however good or bad it turns out to be. I'm expecting a fairly fun family coaster, and maybe that's what they're after. It won't be a GREAT ride though. You can quote me on that down the line if you want.

So I'm getting the feeling that the ride will be based on something underground, first Nemesis, then Th13teen (arguably Smiler if you think back to construction) and now this.

Is the general theme round Towers is that every area round the park is cursed with something underground, unless this is the overall theme to tie in with Hex! :p

Quite right too with the past history of the Battle of Slain Hollow on Bunbury Hill (Towers Site).
The whole area is cursed by the losses of King Ina.
Don't mess with the Valley of the Slain...

Lol at all the speculation that there's going to be a huge underground section. Don't be foolish. You can see on the plans where the track goes. It doesn't disappear anywhere.

It reminds of the supposed huge tunnels that were to be built into Sub Terra, the Washing Machine of The Smiler, and most hilarious, the underground loop Oblivion was said to have.

It is what it is. Look at it. Accept it.

It won't be a GREAT ride though. You can quote me on that down the line if you want.

Done! ;)

Well based on the above speculation the ride's USP is perfectly clear.

It's going to be the world's first wooden roller coaster with an underground washing machine Loop drop dedicated to twists.

Oh and it'll probably have yet another apocalyptic theme and a cattlepen queue.

It's called a secret weapon for a reason, and in my view anyone who says they know or thinks they know... doesn't.

Any theory from me will be entirely speculation (though when I was abducted by space aliens on the way home from the pub, they said that SW8 would feature Alien Technology currently being back engineered at Area 51, S4, Groom Lake, Nevada).

From what I have heard, it will be a 1.3m restriction, similar scare factor to 13 and the secret element is to do with fire

Well towers do have a reputation for doing insurance jobs. Let me think...

SW8 is made of wood.... Secret element is fire... Ride looks crap etc...

I know!! Lets set fire to it and build a better ride. Put it on the insurance.
