Planet Coaster 2: General Discussion

I don't have Planet Coaster so have no idea what is coming in what pack etc., but we seem to be nitpicking over little details here. Let's try and remain civil, there's no need to start picking other people's posts apart on what is a simply a fun discussion forum!

Thank you.

Apologies; I didn’t know I’d open such a can of worms!

I’m just glad it’s coming, anyhow. It’s a really common ride type not to have!

My computer died around the summer, I have not replaced it.

I did however, for many reasons, the now delayed GTA VI being one of them, go and purchase a PS5 Pro not long ago. I have not yet purchased PC2 for it, but there is a 2 hour demo on PS Plus which have given that a whirl, it was nice to see one of the Pro enhancements is the ray traced global illumination, making indoor dark rides actually pitch black.

I haven't decided yet if I should bite the bullet and purchase the full game and DLC for the Christmas break and beyond. I will buy a wireless keyboard and mouse too for the PS5 if this is the route I go down. The other and least favourable option would be to invest in a new PC. An option I do not really want to do.

These updates and DLC however, look great and have absolutely captured my attention for this game. Looking at the snow, it looks amazing how it lands in all of the placed scenery and rides, and sort of naturally develops on the ground as it would in real life.

It is nice to see that 12 months of updates have actually putt much wanted quality of life improvements and some genuinely innovative features and ride types into the game.

I've just purchased the Toybox DLC and received the free update 8. I have to say, with the inclusion of snow and thunderstorms (that you can turn on and off manually) I think they have improved the graphics considerably. While still retaining the "Planet Coaster" cartoon look and feel, the graphics just seem more realistic and rich in colour. I don't know what they've done, but it is very impressive.

The game has come on leaps and bounds since its initial release a year ago and many of the criticisms of it have been addressed and resolved. In my mind, it's now in a brilliant position, here are a few things this game now has:
  • all the base PC1 themes are now in PC2 (not the paid DLCs though)
  • it also has new additional base themes too like vikings
  • grid pieces like walls (and full buildings) can now be rotated
  • all non-grid theming pieces and animatronics are now scalable
  • realistic weather (although they do need to sort out appropriate guest clothing!)
  • superb original music for rides and areas (loving the theme for the Toybox DLC watch from 2:23 for 5 minutes for music from it)
  • ability to use your own media (PC only)
  • on-ride photos with realtime updated photo previews on screens just like in real life
  • animatronic sliders and rotators that can be used to create almost any moving thing you want (check out Tagi to see how these can be used!)
  • scenery pieces can be added to all rides and coaster trains
  • many coasters now have switch tracks
  • many other things I've probably forgotten
Anyone who is sitting on the fence about this game - whether that is because of the rocky start it had a year ago or other reasons - just buy it, whatever your creative skill level is (mine is about -1) you won't regret it.

@DistortAMG I'd seriously consider getting a PC for this, it is far easier to use than a console and you have less restrictions (you can use your own music, sound and videos for starters). Regarding a PC spec, you do not need a top of the range gaming PC - I have an older PC, probably about 4 or 5 years old and compared to today's gaming PC specs probably quite "middle of the road" and it copes perfectly well (I have an Asus B550 Plus motherboard, AMD Ryzen 9 5950X Processor, 32GB ram and Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB graphics card). If the sluggishness of PC1 on a PC when you loaded large parks used to bring you out in a cold sweat, don't worry, PC2 is far, far faster and optimised. You can get into a large park from clicking the desktop icon to moving around the park in probably 60-90 seconds.

The only change I don't like is the prestige tweaks; my rides now have lower ratings than before the update, so I'm worried that guests won't want to ride my smaller ones.

The one thing I still can’t get to grips with is the paving tool.

I preferred the one in the original Planet Coaster!
That is an option to use still, I am pretty sure there is some legacy type of mode.

I like pc2 ad it is much, much easier to make plazas artound objects such as fountains, or lawns compared to pc1

The "classic paths" option in PC2 is "apparently" the same as PC1 paths, but it really isn't. I refuse to see exactly how it's the same... It's even worse than the Line Builder! 🤦‍♂️

I agree with @Matt N, the original PC1 path system was much better.

I feel the same as Dave, the new pathing tools are far superior. The tool that let's you move the path nodes is an absolute game changer. I tend to make my paths the old way, which sometimes causes weird gaps and paths to not line up, but then grab the nodes and use it to blend everything together. I end up with exactly what I wanted, which I could never achieve with PC1, and often had to start over multiple times just to get close.

Had time to jump back into the game the last few days. Not been in the mood to work on anything too big so been enjoying the campaign. Noticed they've already updated some of the levels to include things like heaters so they still work with the weather update. Nice little touch I hadn't expected.

Planet Coaster 2 is part of December's PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium offering.

It's a great way to get a feel for the game, but be aware that it's part of "Game Catalog" and not the monthly Library games. This means, at some point, it will be removed from PlayStation Plus and any DLC purchased will be useless.

For PC owners, it's also half price at an absolute bargain price of £19.99 on Steam until next Thursday, 18th. All DLCs except Toy Box are reduced by up to 50% too

It's also reduced the same amount on the Epic Games platform too, and that offer is valid until 8th Jan.

I expect now the game has matured amongst its core audience (theme park and simulator enthusiasts), they want to push the sale of the game to more casual audiences and boost the average spend on the game with the amount of DLC they’ve introduced.

I suspect they’ll be more discounts, similar to how the original Planet Coaster as the game progressed. I also think PC2 will be the definitive theme park simulator a long while too, as this generation of PCs and Consoles matures but increasingly becomes more expensive due to the demand of GPUs at the moment.

Personally, I still haven’t brought PC2 because of the lack of a device powerful enough to play the game. I have a laptop which is slowly ageing and an original Nintendo Switch but I am curious in buying the new Steam Machine when it releases next year.

This is because I get the benefits of having the most recent generation of console with the flexibility of a Personal Computer (that feels so weird to type). I reckon Planet Coaster 2 will be one of the most ideal games to promote alongside the Steam Machine & Steam Deck, so it might be worth Frontier promoting the game alongside those, if they gain momentum. I believe they read this forum, just how the UK theme parks also read the forum.

and I thought I found a good price with the deluxe edition at £29.99 from Loaded (CD Keys) a few weeks ago. Only for me to get busy and not actually start playing as planned!
The deluxe edition includes the vintage rides pack, so in this Steam offer its £27.98 if you get that as seperate DLC and the game.

It is not GPU's pushing prices, it is DRAM. RAM has tripled in value in the past 2 or 3 weeks. As AI data centres gobble up HUGE quantities of the stuff, alongside a whole third of the consumer markets supply being indefinitely cut off, as Micron, one of the worlds largest consumer suppliers (Crucial Memory anyone?) exit the consumer market completely and switch to only supplying commercial. AKA, data centres. This is similar to what happened with GPU prices, but we did not have a third of the market supply exit over night, plus ASIC's in AI data centres now massively reduce the need for GPU's, meaning prices stabilized.

This is going to push computers of every type up in price. It is nice to see GPU prices settled, but it wont last for long. You can pick up a fully working RTX 5060 system for less than £800, very well priced, but that price will not last long though with the great DRAM inflation going on now.

@GooseOnTheLoose thanks for pointing this out on PS Plus, that's my weekend sorted then!!.
I will for now, pump some time and effort into the PS5 version of Planet Coaster, right now I am more of a park explorer than builder, with so many great parks on the workshop, it supply's hours of fun. PlayStation 5 Pro scratches that use case of Planet Coaster 2 for me very well, for now.
