    Incident on The Smiler 02/06/2015

My mother and brother were there today, not open but still actively testing.

    Roughest Coasters

Curiously, I found that one train is lovely, the other is as rough as the proverbial badger's behind.

What I hope they're doing up there is: 1) ensuring the chain guide wheels cannot fall out 2) locking all track bolts with locknuts / wire / split pins (if castellated nuts) Wheels falling off and potentially deadly lumps of metal falling on people in the queueline are certainly going to do...

    Return tickets

Without presenting your ticket for that particular day, how do you prevent someone going into guest services multiple times to get several £15 tickets, then selling them on at £20? It's not stupid, it's how a business stays in business.

    Incident on The Smiler 02/06/2015

I wonder if they bothered repainting it after last winter's 'delicate reprofiling' with the angry grinders?

That's a double-failure though, in fact, triple if you count the stall. Can never reduce the failure rate to zero, but another layer will reduce it significantly. The system works well in signalling systems on the rail network. Going to revise that to double-failure, hard-resetting the system...

    Incident on The Smiler 02/06/2015

Are we moving into the realms of Continuous Section Occupation Sensing? It's not actually that difficult, you just have two contact strips that run in between the tracks, and a mini-pantograph arrangment on the bottom of the carts that completes the circuit when it is in that section. On...

But seriously, it's virtually impossible to eliminate the requirement for hard-reset. These systems only know when something has entered the section, and when they have exited, if a train is removed by crane, it doesn't pass the section exit sensors so the hard-reset is required to clear the...

    The Magic

I thought reading it in such a way was mandatory.

Simple solution, make a bracket on the batwing, hang the hard-reset key from it, That way, each time they need the key, operators are forced to acknowledge that there's a stalled car in the way :D

    Incident on The Smiler 02/06/2015

Redesigning the trains has so many knock-on effects on safety that it's just not going to be done unless it's an HSE recommendation. Providing a crumple zone at the front would change the weight balance of the train and wheel loadings. The damn thing struggles to get around the track as it is...

    Incident on The Smiler 02/06/2015

It is a real technical accomplishment to fit so much into such a small space. Yes, certain elements of the execution are lacklustre, but I can understand it being a favourite for many.

    2017/18: SW8 Speculation

I quite like the regular coaster section, it's tight and intimate, got the proper Hillybilly back-yard, home-brew special feel about it.

    Incident on The Smiler 02/06/2015

Precisely, it's perceived as bad value to visit with a major attraction out of action, yet the ticket price being unchanged. I cannot understand why Merlin do not apply a discount to the tickets to compensate for the Smiler being out of use, much like Telford railway have done with one of their...

    Incident on The Smiler 02/06/2015

Am I being a bit blind, does the prohibition notice not actually state to which ride this is applicable? Also, there are two notices issued on the same day, I wonder if another ride was subject to a prohibition notice...

    2017/18: SW8 Speculation

I have to confess to quite liking 13 though, but gimmicks get folk through the door once, you need quality rides like Nemesis and Oblivion to keep people coming back.

What if Merlin sold off Alton Towers?

I have to say though, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Drayton Manor have really upped their game, exaggerated all the more so by Merlin's lack of investment in the right places. I concede that I enjoy both BPB and DM more than the Towers these days.

How Might The Towers earn the Publics Trust back?

Open the Smiler, folk are not going because they perceive it to be bad value with one of the major attractions closed. It'd be like buying a new car and finding there's no seats in it.
