I don't think there's anything stopping you buying a new annual pass before your current one expires. I see no reason for Merlin to want you not to do it, the only reason against it is that under normal circumstances it would cost you more money.

I had one through Clubcard points but my pass expired in June. I'm currently waiting to build up enough points and get one probably around January time. Myself and my girlfriend will get one each, one through Clubcard points and the other in the January sale if they do it again.

Could it be possible that wherever they store the Oblivion merchandise that isn't in the shop will be the same place they store the extra SW7 merch that isn't in it's own shop, so they need to clear out some space in preparation?

I think that would be very foolish from the park's point of view. I would say that Oblivion is probably the ride with the strongest 'brand' around it. Equally, what we've seen of SW7 so far seems relatively bang in line with Oblivion's theme and X Sector as a whole.
