Driving to Alton Towers from Central Manchester

Hello, I'm going to be making a trip to the resort and I'll be driving down from central Manchester. Can anyone who knows the journey advise on which is the best route to take? Main 2 options suggested are to drive down through Macclesfield & Leek, or go via M62 & M6 and then back across through Stoke which adds 20miles onto the journey (which doesn't seem worth it).

To me, the first suggested route is the best? I'm guessing the roads will mostly be narrow, winding and filled with potholes though.

Having taken the car journey from Manchester many times over the years, the Macclesfield and Leek route is definitely the best option. As for the potholes, you'll be surprised at the lack of them.
 
I would definitely agree that the leek rout is the best by far if you're coming from that direction. Although I would try to avoid Macclesfield & Stockport at all costs, traffic is horrendous. If you follow the A34 to a crossroads a bit before Congleton, you can skip out the slow windy village roads and congested thoroughfares. Speed limits are decent too.
