- Stupid posters everywhere - the only posters I really recall seeing are all of the beautiful ones around where all the ticket booths are
- Extract cash at any moment - nowhere near at the same level as Merlin, just what you would expect from any theme park really
- Shout at you to buy things - not when I've ever been there
- Poor service - expection rather than the rule
- Allow park to become run down - the only point you may actually have although a lot of work was taking place to correct this when I was there
- Full of depressing themes - certainly not!

The Magic

The magic is everywhere but Adventure Land and Dark Forest. That's pretty much it!

The towers and gardens. That's where the magic remains consistent.

For me, I feel the magic when looking at the view down towers street when entering the park. That view of the towers in the distant just equals happiness to me.
Also, I would say Gloomy Wood, looking at the front of Duel, that makes me feel all happy and fuzzy too haha.

I must totally agree with this also. The magic purveys from the Towers and grounds. And I'd also add, Oblivion, and the bridge by the loop on Nemesis. Or just at the top of normal bit of queue when she comes racing down at you at a frankly absurd speed from such a small drop and twists above your head.
I know we all go on about Wardley in God like terms, but for me, he is without peer in his ability to create magic in a park - give him Towers and it was one of the moments in time where something just "clicks".
For all we say about Varney now, back then, he knew what he was doing. I don't think half of us would be so mad with the guy if he hadn't shown he CAN be part of something incredible.
A real shame.

Europa Park stole it.
In all seriousness there is very little magic. Decay is not magic. Rot is not magic. Running out of food is not magic. Rude staff is not magic. A park full of dark themes is not magic.
The Towers and Gardens are the only parts of the park that hold any sense of 'magic'. The Towers lit up after the fireworks is beautiful and magical.
Thing is though, how do you define magic? It's not something that is either there or not there. It is a very personal thing. A few years back I did feel that some magic was returning to Alton Towers, yet for me that has completely disappeared again. However I understand that for others there may well be some magic in the park. And I have no doubts that children going for their first visit find it somewhat magical.
I even think there are different types of theme park magic. Disney have a definite magic. I find Euorpa have magic, yet it is in a totally different way to Disney. It's something that you cannot easily explain.

Magic is how it makes you feel. It's emotions it invokes. It is atmosphere created by awe and wonder. We are bio-electrical beings, sensitive to energies of all kinds, when you get a group of people wrapped up in awe it is tangible and perceived by our consciousness. Magic is real. Defining what it is, is more difficult, it is a combination of many complex aspects of the human psyche and forces of nature that impress upon us.
The majestic towers, the beautiful gardens, the happiness, the people, the feeling part of something others are enjoying, these are the more obvious factors.
Ones that people who then stick STUPID POSTERS everywhere, try to extract your cash at any given moment, shout at you to buy things, provide you with poor service, or allow the park to become run down and full of depressing themes DO NOT GET.
The magic is there, but it's being gradually removed by people at the park who have totally lost track of what Alton Towers and a theme park means.

That bold bit could easily be applied to Disneyland Paris, which still has a lot more magic than Towers does (though that is probably due to the Disney effect)...
