Florida 2018: 'The Skyscraper' - Intamin - world's tallest coaster

Re: Florida 2015: S&S - world's tallest coaster

This has now been confrimed for International Drive in Orlando. It will be called Skyscraper and open at a new complex called Skyplex. It will stand at over 500ft tall.

There appears to be a website about it here. It states the following about the coaster:

No trip to Orlando will be complete without riding “The Skyscraper”. The world’s tallest rollercoaster begins with a quick briefing on the amazing adventure you are about to experience. Upon loading the Skyscraper ride vehicle visitors begin their assent to the top of the Skyplex tower. As the vehicle climbs to its ultimate height of over 500’, riders get a spectacular view of Central Florida and on a clear day can see all the way to both coasts. At the apex riders prepare for the most exciting decent of their life, spiraling down the Skyscraper structure, at some times completely inverted until reaching the base of the tower where the Skyscraper actually shoots out over International Drive before coming to rest at the ride base. Each rider is captured on video as they experience the Skyscraper and the videos can be transferred to phones, Facebook, Instagram, so they can be shared with friends.

The complex is set to open in 2016.

Here's a clearer pic from TPR as well:

Looks pretty awesome to me!

TPR have a video of the announcement:

http://youtu.be/wCYZDB1Sl4U

A few things from this:

- The whole project is costing around $200 million
- It will be opposite where the Orlando Eye is currently being built
- There will be two floors at the top of the tower. One will be the observation deck, the top floor will be a restaurant/evening club venue
- The coaster will be 5200ft long which is just under a mile
- It will have a top speed of 65pmh
- Features many different inversions and will obviously have the highest inversion in the world
- Theoretical throughput is 1000pph
- Ride vehicles will be two rows of four with 'stadium seating', and it will have lap bars!
- The pricing is yet to be decided but unlimited rides will cost less than $20
- They have the exclusive rights for Poler Coasters in Florida

Must say I'm very excited about this. It's something completely different to any other coaster currently out there in the world. They plan to break ground in 2015, should be great to follow!

:)

Lapbars with inversions at that height just can't go wrong (presuming they are comfortable lapbars) :p

This does kind of render the Orlando Eye kind of pointless if they're right next to each other and the Skyscraper is taller though.

All that height to play with and it only reaches 65mph? What a waste.

Looks really fun, so can't fault it there!

But it's made by S&S so it'll be naff and we'll be lucky if it opens at half the height by 2026 :p

The only downside to the video is the obvious OTSRs. Hopefully they stay as concept only when we've been promised lapbars. The Skyplex complex looks pretty decent on the whole too, Mandy would be happy with that colourful fountain.

IF they actually build this coaster well, it looks like it could be up there as one of the best. That climb and first overbank!

I don't understand the seemingly widespread hate for S&S coasters here. It's true that certain S&S rides have a history of being unreliable (mainly due to their tendency of using air for everything whether appropriate or not) but their El Loco models have been pretty robust from what I can tell.

What baffles me most though is how so many write off all of their coasters as poor when the only S&S coaster in the UK is Mumbo Jumbo which I actually think is alright. It certainly rides smoother and feels better put together than any Gerstlauer product I've ridden.

Looking further afield, Bullet Coaster at Happy Valley Shenzhen is probably the best launch coaster I've been on. It has better trains and restraints than Intamin versions, it's smoother too and has a decent layout beyond the top hat. It's unlikely to be topping international coaster polls anytime soon but if it were built in the UK it would be a much celebrated coaster.

Well that looks relatively insane!

Seems like a lack of block sections though?

Think they edited out the blocks.

Slightly repetitive maybe but looks absolutely insane, surely one of the best ever, it's mental.

And isn't there an even bigger one on the way? Bring that on.

It doesn't even have a break run at the end so I wouldn't worry too much about the blocks. I could see at least 4 places where you could have blocks. Surely with any less throughput would be utterly horrendous. The vid shows 3 cars on track, although I guess that's to be taken with a bucket of salt.

Looks stunning though, so many 'first drops' and many, many highlights. Really should be amazing.

That first outside banked turn and inversion look absolutely terrifying too.

How many inversions was it, 6?

If all that steel structure is made by S&S, that's going to be one huge build for them and if anything goes wrong (this is S&S after all), this would be a disaster for the company.

Only the coaster is by S&S I believe, or at least that's what I've read somewhere rather than the entire steel structure.

Needless to say, it's going to be a fun one to inspect each year! Can't see that being a cheap or straightforward affair, especially if it ever needs any work doing.

A stall on this thing would be a sight to behold too :p
