Thorpe Park 2017: DBGT: Rise of The Demon

Great, Candy Crush Land is confirmed then!

I was just having a bank holiday browse of TPM and saw the teaser banners for the attraction, and to be honest they don't look like they relate to any of the three properties I heard cited, so I have absolutely no idea at this stage. One of them looks distinctly reminiscent of Doctor Who, but then, I also heard that plan was off. It's possible that Merlin have only very recently made a final decision.

Hi, I'm a new member and have really enjoyed reading this forum for a while now. As a big fan of dark rides I'm very excited about this development. With the current relationships Merlin have with BBC and Lionsgate in mind I thought Doctor Who or Hunger Games would be the most likely choices for the IP for this, and the banners look very much like Doctor Who to me. What properties did you hear cited?

I can't really say (sorry to be that guy), but Doctor Who and THG were both mentioned, with the former being off the cards apparently. I wouldn't look too much into the banners. At this point three years ago, The Smiler was intended to have a different, IP headed theme, and the banners on the construction site there didn't reflect anything in particular. As I mentioned, I heard one big gaming property was being looked into, and one other, very popular television show.

I think to do it justice, they would have to build a huge enclosed area, probably the size of half the park. Can't see that happening somehow.

It'll be Candy Crush and we all know it.

In all seriousness, Halo is the likely forerunner, if this is a videogame. I mean, Halo was the original plan for SW7 (someone correct me if I am wrong) so they clearly have interest in the IP. And the theme of the building kinda matches. That is where my money is, anyway.

I think you're right re: Halo and SW7 - I remember the initial advertising for SW7 had strong similarities to the Halo franchise.

Rumours of Merlin and Halo have been circulating for a long time and for various projects so there could well be something in that one. All I know though is that Halo is a popular Xbox game so if it is that my interest levels drop immediately!

:)

Halo would be well suited for Thorpe, fits in with their guest type (and it would still be family friendly for younger guests who play the games). If any Merlin park has Halo, it should be Thorpe. I remember when we had rumours of SW7 having a Halo theme, that would have destroyed X-Sector so I'm glad that never went ahead.

Let's not forget that Halo 5 is released at the end of October this year too. It'll have been 3 years since the last major Halo game so it would provide some great publicity and excitement going into the start of next season.

I'm completely out of touch with Halo now, but it'd be an interesting IP. However, if they were going to do it I think they'd have already done it. Surely the most obvious ride type you could build with a Halo theme would be a wing coaster themed to a group of Covenant Banshees attacking a UNSC base, seeing as the Banshee's shape is pretty close to a wing coaster car? Thorpe already have that base covered of course, unless Swarm ever gets a retheme...

There was a pursuit of Halo as an IP to match SW7, but apparently the rights couldn't be agreed upon at the time. Obviously it's still an incredibly popular, potentially timeless franchise, so I can potentially see Merlin going beyond the call of duty to secure it even now.

A recent planning application has revealed more concept art for the new dark ride for next year:

Nothing exciting, the codename appears to be "WC16" though - interesting choice :p
