I've been meaning to create this thread for quite some time, but haven't got around to it until now. Essentially, I envisage this as being a thread where people can discuss why certain songs/pieces of music evoke certain memories. I've got quite a few to start it off.

Otto Knows - Million Voices
First heard this on the Saturday of the 2012 Fireworks at Towers, and combined with the lasers in the pre-show, it was superb. Yeah, the show itself was a bit pants, but this song helped to set the atmosphere really well.

Underworld - And I Will Kiss
London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony. The transformation from the 'green and pleasant land' into the Industrial Revolution and the present day over seventeen thrilling, epic, hair-raising minutes. It marked the start of what was probably the best summer of my life. Which kinda brings me onto my next choice...

Underworld - Caliban's Dream
Again, this was from the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, played when the torch was brought into the stadium and the amazing cauldron was seen for the first time when it was lit. It was just one of those moments that will stay with me forever. About three weeks later, I was on the Eurostar from London to Lille as one leg of my first trip to Europa-Park, and I was listening to the soundtrack from the Opening Ceremony on my phone. (I'd bought it as soon as it had become available on Amazon, and was delighted when it finally got delivered.) As the train was blasting through France, 'Caliban's Dream' came on, and I suddenly got this strange sensation that I can't really describe.

David Bowie - Heroes
Yet another one from the Opening Ceremony. Anyone would think I'm obsessed with the thing! :p The parade of competing athletes had gone on for a long time, and when Great Britain finally entered right at the end, this song blasted out. Superb choice. I ended up playing it whenever we won a gold medal. So as you can imagine, this happened a lot. :p

Elbow - First Steps
Last Olympics-related one I've got for now. The theme music for the BBC's coverage of the Games, and it's a brilliant track.

John Newman - Love Me Again
Alton Towers Fireworks 2013. That's all I'm sayin'. I have great memories of several of us dancing around on the lawns at Towers while this song was playing in the pre-show, and it was even better on the Sunday of the Fireworks, given that it was my 21st birthday that day! :D

Coldplay - Charlie Brown
Another one from the 2013 Fireworks show, that sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it. Love it. <3

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars
A slightly more sombre one, this. 25th October 2010 was one of the worst days of my life. My brother had got married two days before and had gone off on his honeymoon with his wife. I was at the house he was (and still is) living in with my parents and my younger brother when Mum got a phone call from one of her younger brothers. My grandmother had been found in bed by one of her grandsons (he'd been living with her for a few years) after he got home from work. He didn't hear anything from her on that morning when he left, but assumed that she was probably a bit tired from travelling between Leicestershire and Cornwall that weekend. I made my way home with Mum and my younger brother while Dad stayed at the house in St Austell to finish off whatever he was doing. Not long after we got home, we ended up getting the message we'd all been dreading. Grandma had died. I went and called Dad to let him know, and then just went into his study to use the computer for a bit. 'Chasing Cars' was the first song I came across, and I just had it on repeat for ages.

Jonathan Veira - You Raise Me Up
This one's another more sombre one from me. When my grandfather died in February 2010, this song was sung by the male voice choir of which he had been a member for many years, and - I'll be honest - it was rather poor. A couple of months later, I was at Spring Harvest in Minehead, and Jonathan Veira came into the Big Top to promote a concert he was giving on site that night, and ended up singing this song. It made Mum cry, as she was still coming to terms with the loss of her father a couple of months before, and it brought tears to my eyes as well!

I saw this posted by you and I immediately though you would include And I Will Kiss and Caliban's Dream :p

One of my most memorable music is Let It be by The Beatles. It comes from the 2013 play off final and it was played after Palace won the game. The part that makes me remember it with the game was that the Palace fans were signing "Scoring goals for Palace, Glenn Murray" to the tune, in honour to our goal scorer who bagged 30 goals to help take us up. It was such a powerful moment because he suffered a serious injury, but the way the Palace fans sang it sent shivers down my spine. Will never forgot the game, and Let It be will always remind me of it.
 
One of my most memorable songs has to be "Love Shack" by the B52s. My mum fell in love with the song back in the early 90's whilst on a skiing holiday, and whenever it was played at a disco etc she'd always be first up and dancing.

It was also played during her funeral this time last year, alongside Depeche Mode's "Somebody" and Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now".
 
'And I Will Kiss' and 'Caliban's Dream' are beautiful pieces and listening to them brings back strong memories of that brilliant opening ceremony and those amazing games. I truly felt proud to be British. *Tears up* *Sips tea*
 
Also, Blame It On Me is particularly memorable for me. On our college trip to Germany back in February one of the guys in our room had a playlist going, and that song kept popping up most evenings. Reminds me of what a fantastic time I had there and all the amazing people I met. :)

Me and my Dad used to listen to a lot of prog rock when I was younger; in particular 'Heat of the Moment' by Asia always makes me feel really happy, plus it's a great song. That along with some Emerson Lake and Palmer. 'Riders on the Storm' also really reminds me of this point in my life. :D

Another is definitely the Back to the Future theme by Alan Silvestri, one of the best pieces of music ever written imo. Me and my Dad would always watch Back to the Future and it remains my favourite film. 'Power of Love' and 'Back in Time' also fit in here. :p

The Hymn "Jerusalem" Purely because it is one of the few hymns which we all sing with gusto at school and it gives me a weird happy feeling. Although I'm not religious I just enjoy the song and singing it with my peers!
 
May as well revive this.

Two songs which give me a tingly feeling inside are "Me Plus One" and "Seek and Destroy" from Kasabian's album, Empire. I first properly listened to them in the car on the way to one of my first TS meets and it reminds me of the great times I've had with you all. Always have to play the album if I'm going to a theme park in my dad's car. :)



 
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert - Same Love
I first listened to this song (and watched the video) only a few weeks ago after it came up in a countdown video of 'Top 10 LGBT Anthems' or something, and it really struck a chord with me. I fell in love with it pretty much immediately, and listened to it for quite a while on end. Not exactly memorable, I know, but it somewhat reminds me of the struggle that LGBT people have faced for many years, even as acceptance has increased a lot over recent years.

Country Roads
My personal favourite version of this song was performed by Hermes House Band, though John Denver's original is pretty decent as well. It's a great feel-good tune. Also, this being performed at Silver Lake Saloon with Westernpfanne in front of you and a Lynchburg Lemonade in your hand is something that is always a major highlight of mine when I go to Europa-Park. Plus it kinda helps that EP is something of a second home to me. :p

Black Lace - Gang Bang
So I'd just got to Uttoxeter station to pick up Tom and Panda on the Saturday of Fireworks 2014, having already collected Danny and Kim from Stoke. I put my phone on shuffle for a bit of music, and the first song that came on was 'Gang Bang' by Black Lace. (I did actually choose this one for a bit of a laugh, and it went onto shuffle thereafter.) Danny decided to wind the window down and shout something at those who were waiting for the 32A to Towers. If you've ever watched 'The Inbetweeners', specifically the episode in Series 2 when the four drive to London for a night out, you can probably guess what Danny ended up shouting. We were all crying with laughter afterwards! :p

Elbow - One Day Like This
Don't know why I didn't mention this one in my original post! :p Another Olympics-related one, and like several songs from that summer, it just brings back so many wonderful memories.

John Williams - Schindler's List Theme
In April last year, I went to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield with Mum to watch the World Snooker Championships. It was a bit of a late birthday treat for Mum, and I'd wanted to actually see it for myself for a while. We both had a really nice evening, but we didn't get back until something like half 1 in the morning after driving across the Peak District (Mum had driven there, and we agreed that I'd drive back due to my propensity for staying up until the early hours of the morning). As we were going across the Peak District, the theme from Schindler's List came on - I think it was on the USB stick that Mum's put a load of music onto, which sits in the USB slot in the car - and it actually took me a while to recognise it! We then ended up having a bit of a talk about John Williams, and we both agreed that he's definitely one of the greatest film music composers ever, if not THE greatest. Certainly not a conversation I ever expected to have in the middle of the night with my mother in a car driving across the Peak District! :p

The Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way

1986, I was a young 14 year old at my local traveling fair sat on a Matterhorn ride with this music belting out at full volume it hurt your ears... strange how that is the only thing that sticks with me, good times :)

1998, Two years older and walking the streets in the early hours delivering my papers, earning some money with this on full on my walkman.. yes Walkman cassette tape. I loved my paper rounds, no one about and just me and my music

Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time

1989, Another year older and its Saturday afternoon and my dad has taken me to the boozer,again :D, Cher is playing on the video jukebox, and him and his mates drooling over her. Happy times of me and my dad, always makes me think of him :)

Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)

2006, Older but not wiser just a lot more cynical. This was one of my partners favourites and the song we played as we said goodbye to him. Its still a tough one to listen to, even after 10 years as the memories.. :(

Yes Jon! There are very few John Williams scores that you leave and don't remember the melody, he just has that talent for putting the right sequence of notes together in the right rhythm that sound so inevitable.

My favourite John Williams score, and perhaps his most memorable is E.T. Something about that film and score together is just unrivalled in cinema. And I've been lucky enough to see John Williams conduct it live, as well as the whole film with live orchestra last year (it's coming to the UK in December at the Royal Albert Hall if anyone's interested!) ;)

Les Misérables - One Day More (the version from the 2012 film)
It'll come as no surprise to most of you that Les Misérables is my favourite musical. I've seen the 25th Anniversary and the 2012 film more times than I can remember (I even saw the film four times in the cinema :p). So many amazing songs, but this one is a bit special. Back in 2013, we moved from Cornwall to Staffordshire, and we had the soundtrack from Les Mis on in the car. This song came on, and Mum recognised that the lyrics had a bit of significance, specifically the line "Tomorrow we'll discover what our God in heaven has in store". I completely forgot about it until a few minutes ago! :p
 
Coldplay - Paradise.

This song reminds me of summer 2012 which was fantastic as I had some fantastic friends, and I saw a lot of my family. It was also the summer after I finished my first year at 6th form. Since that year people have passed on and there have been multiple big falling outs, but that summer just seemed so good, and this song just reminds me of all the good times that I had that summer. :)


Alestorm - Drink.

This song is one of my favourite Alestorm songs, and the whole being a pirate thing is something I like. But it also reflects on the people and the societies I've invested more time in this year, such as the Rock, Alternative, Metal Society (RAMS), these people have been there for me and have also witness me start drinking Ale as well as cider, without these guys (among others) I doubt I would have survived this year.
 


As I was walking in to college for my final GCSE exam on the morning of Friday 24th June 2016 (yes, the morning that BREXIT was announced), this song came on on my random playlist I was listening to. Sort of sums up the countdown to voting closing... I dunno. :p I just like the song and reminds me of those moments of finishing GCSEs, the EU referendum and the brilliant TS South weekend. :)
