Whilst Wardley is a good man and has had a lot of great impact over the years, I think some folk need to calm down about him!

This coaster, whilst I don't think it will be anything like as good as the woodie we'd all hoped and dreamed of arriving at the park, will still be decent. It will absolutely be better than Th13teen, better than Rita and better than Galactica, too. I find it amusing that suddenly some people seem to be lauding Th13teen. It's rubbish. Terrible build quality and a boring ride.

At worst, I reckon it'll be like Joris en de Draak. Which isn't a bad ride at all. It's just not what we could have had.

GCI's don't build bad coasters. At worst they're simply fun. Not to mention it'll be a 1.2m restriction.

Could it do what Joris en de Draak does and have the middle seats be 1.1m? I really like Joris en de Draak and can't say I have been on a bad GCI so I am looking forward to this, I hope they do go with a Pirate theme and I hope that the gimmick isn't too out of place (I would prefer no gimmick but they like them for marketing purposes so it is what it is). Something like Krake's theme wouldn't be bad, the landscaping and vegitation of the area already give it quite a nice backdrop.

GCI will produce a good coaster there's no doubt about it , especially with the setting , family thrill is a sensible choice.

I am curious why people are acting as though a park can only have one wooden coaster ever though. If SW8 is popular and "disproves" the perception wooden coasters are unsafe, I can see Towers working with RMC somewhere in the near future

Wickerman if done well could be a good theme. My concern however is that the theme won't fit in with either mutiny bay or Katanga canyon. There is already enough mish mashed themeing around the park they should at least look at making this coherent with the surrounding areas. A pirate or kraken theme would suite better here.

As for the ride it will be good. But it will be just that, good. It will be no world beater and probably at best the 3rd best coaster on the park. But I have no doubt it will be a solid addition to the lineup. I do however feel part of me will always think, as I do with Thirteen that it could have been so much more.

Wait and see I guess

Nobody likes Intamin, but you gotta admit that given the complexity of the ride system it works rather well, reliably, with decent throughput, the gimmick is a fairly substantial one, and to my knowledge hasn't seriously injured anyone.

Can't say the same about The Smiler. That thing is a great example of a P.O.S ride with terrible build quality.

I don't know how people can comment on what the coaster will be like at this early stage!

It's fairly simple. You look at the plans and compare them to plans for other rides, or projects being developed by other parks, and then conclude what a disappointment it appears to be.

Blackpool will win this one.

I find Joris a rather solid coaster. It's not so much the layout, but the racing and duelling elements that make it great alongside small things like the cheer/jeer elements too.

Don't think SW8 will necessarily be a bad coaster (should it ride well), just a missed opportunity of making something acceptable instead of something exceptional.

I must be in the minority that actually enjoys Thirteen. I know it could've been done better, but I love the combination of coaster and drop track and must admit I am one for gothic themes (if not over used).

Whilst I much prefer The Smiler to Th13teen, I do agree.

We've got an opening date!

Work has started on building a top secret rollercoaster at Alton Towers to replace The Flume.

Full details have not yet been revealed about the new ride – currently called SW8 or Secret Weapon 8 – but it will stand 196 metres high and border Mutiny Bay and Kantaga Canyon.

Now the theme park has revealed its latest big attraction should be open for the start of the 2018 season.

Construction is expected to take 13 to 14 months before staff carry out checks to ensure the ride is running properly.

I think we already figured that much. 196 meters tall is impressive though, not entirely sure how the council approved that.
I suppose it all depends if the station is somehow sunk into the ground? So it could be 196 meters above the ride station, but not so high above normal terrain?

Would need to be a pretty darn big hole. 196 meters = 643 feet ;)

World's tallest coaster twice the height of the current record holder in a park that can't build a mobile phone mast without having to make it look like a tree.

.... Riiiiiiiiiiggggggghhhhhhttttt........

EDIT: Does anyone remember what the actual height difference is between the top of the lift and the lowest point?
