Wicker Man - General Discussion - Part Two

Problem moreso with any snow even if the park is able to clear up the access to it is another matter...

Indeed, especially with the roads around Towers. If the Met Office forecast is correct then I would say now that there is no chance the park will open tomorrow; it will be too dangerous for both staff and guests to travel to the park.

:)

I called the resort earlier to see if there’s any updates.

They told me that as it stands, everything will be open tomorrow, but should the park be closed they’ll look to rearrange hotel bookings.

Heavy snow all afternoon and 40mph winds. I can't see it opening. If it does.... I think it will open in the morning, try and run wicker man but close by midday. I'm just debating the 3 hour drive up as I have a hotel booked this evening but I'm starting to think otherwise and maybe go up next weekend.
Like wise, we have a 4 hour drive and a premier inn booked for tonight, so need to cancel by 1 at the latest. I think in reality any decision should be made by then

This is somewhat reassuring

That is what they will say until a decision has been taken, and as it stands no decision has been made.

Even if the park does open it is by no means certain that Wicker Man will be able to operate.

:)

I won’t be annoyed at Towers if they don’t open - they can hardly control the weather! - so long as they make everyone aware with enough time and are able to amend their own hotel bookings to reflect this.

Ideally I’d like to know at midday - saves me from travelling up there!

They really need to make up their minds soon, I agree. Chances are the snow won’t be heavy or stick as it won’t be cold enough. They should have enough time in the morning to get rid of any ice. I’m very hopeful that they will get everything running as they plan to.

Had emails from 2 hotel firms yesterday offering last minute deals. Makes clearer sense now. People have been cancelling stays left right and centre the last couple of days.

Have you not seen the forecast? If it does snow then it will settle, and with the winds it will likely form drifts.

The forecast has improved slightly since first thing but it's still not great.

:)

An amber weather warning has now been issued for parts of the Midlands, from 4pm on Saturday until 9am on Sunday.

:)

Yet if you look at the BBC weather they dont forcast any snow at all after 6am!

I expect the park would use several different weather providers to make the decision but there’s no escaping the Met office is pretty much worst case scenario.

If they went by the BBC forecast and opened as usual but the Met office forecast actually happens you can imagine the outrage by people who would say “why say you would be open when we’ve known it was heavy snow / strong winds”

It’s a no win situation for whoever makes that call at the park

Indeed, Alton Towers are in a horrible situation here. Guest and staff safety has to be and will be the priority.

They'll be desperate to open Wicker Man as scheduled but will not want to take any unnecessary risks.

:)

If the park does open as planned then it’ll be very quiet which is very good news indeed! They have now reinforced the idea that it will be open which means that they are probably quite confident. This forecast has been around for about a week now so they have had time to prepare for the worst. I am being an optimist though because I really want to experience the new ride on opening day like everyone else.

Makes me glad that we're not going for a couple more weeks, but having said that, as a kid I remember it snowing and settling on Good Friday in April, so hey ho...

Given the now amber warning ive decided not to head up and lose the money I paid for my stay in a local hotel. To me the 3 hour drive up isnt worth the risk, particularly as the snowfall gets worse in the late afternoon/evening and I have to drive back home again!

If the park does open, I think it will be AM only, try and run a few rides on wickerman but I think they will close in the afternoon. The winds alone are high enough to stop most of the rides.
