Planet Coaster: new Frontier game

Unfortionatly most laptops are not upgradable these days, atleast as far as the CPU and GPU goes. @Burbs I found this on the website you showed me. Again it's Dell. Good brand even if not to my personal taste. For an extra £100, over that other laptop. You get a 6GB GTX 1060, almost double the graphics performance of that other Dell. You also get a 512GB SSD alongside the 1TB hard drive, rather than 128GB SSD.

https://www.svp.co.uk/computing/lap...-gtx-1060-6gb-win-10-4k-ultra-hd-display.html

A 512 GB SSD costs about £110 to buy on its own and the price difference between a GTX 1050TI and GTX 1060 6GB is roughly £130 give or take. It is fair to compare the desktop price difference of the cards seeing as these laptops have the same desktop (although soldered) chips.

When you look at it like that. The extra £100 spent gives you far far better value for money.

EDIT, you are also getting a 4K display thrown in for that extra £100. Although probably better to run Planet Coaster at 1080p by turning the resolution down.

And that is the same line, just a different generation. Do bear in mind that the 1060 in this laptop might be a Max-Q model, but I'm not too sure. I'd personally really recommend that line, as my laptop plays Planet Coaster fantastically!

I did a bit more research and it could very well be a Max Q 1060. However, the Max Q 1060 is only a couple of frames per second behind the normal one. So isn't even an issue.

@Matt N, with laptops and computers in generally. The manufacturer is not really important for performance. The guts inside, which can be placed into any system are what makes it sing. So a Dell laptop with identical specs to an ASUS one for example, will play games pretty much identially.

What is more important for laptops and does vary between manufacturers is things like battery life, quality of the cooling system ect. It is quite an engineering challenge to fit off the shelf components such as Nvidia GPU's and Intel CPU's into small laptop chassis. It is down to each manufacturer to design an effective cooling solution, naturally some companies do it better than others. Dell actually seem pretty good at this.

Ah right. Thanks @DistortAMG! One thing I do remember reading is that the Dell model has one of the best battery lifes of any gaming laptop!

Looks like I'll be getting this one!

Just wondering, when I get round to purchasing Planet Coaster, is it worth buying into all the DLCs at the same time? I'm not so bothered about the construction kits (unless there's anything particularly useful in any of them?), but the Spooky, Adventure, Studios and Vintage packs certainly look like they're great additions to the game.

Any advice/pointers would be appreciated. :)

Sorry a bit off topic comment here but my God video games are expensive now! £38 for the DLC plus £30 for the game itself... and surely "spooky" should have been included in the game to begin with?

Luckily my computer isn't powerful enough to run this game so I'm not tempted. Hopefully they'll release a "Deluxe" version all on one disk.

@speedy, the DLCs are only about £7-8 each, from my experience. Well, that's all that Spooky, Adventure and Vintage set me back per pack, anyway.

Oh, and @Burbs, the link shows a 404 error message when I try to click on it. Did you buy the Dell, or did you go for a different brand? All I saw was GTX 1060.

I added them all up and it's 38 in totall. Mind you I don't know how important that extra content is to the game however.

Disk? Barely anything for PC comes out on disk anymore...

Yeah, it's quite dear, but when I'm spending so much on a machine to play pretty much this game specifically, I don't mind. Also, when they're released individually and you already have the game, it's only an extra £8 every now and then, it's just cause I'm buying the game so late that it'll cost be this much all in one go.

Sorry, unsure what happened there, edited the link now, but it's this one: https://www.svp.co.uk/computing/lap...-gtx-1060-6gb-win-10-4k-ultra-hd-display.html

I've not bought it yet, as waiting for a reply from a friend who may be able to get me some discount. :)

Which is why I've given up on games. I prefer to own software, not lease it.
I've given up on Windows now so if it doesn't work on Ubuntu I'm not buying it... so I'll just stick to Factorio.

@DiogoJ42 I don't know if you've tried it but GOG sells games DLC free :)

EDIT: Sorry I meant to say "DRM free"

All a bit irrelevant really. My gaming PC is now 100% dedicated purely to flight sim (playing Planet Coaster while sitting in a cockpit with no comfortable place to put a keyboard and mouse would be daft), and my generic PC would never be able to run a modern game no matter how much I upgrade it (but it still does the job for what I actually use it for).

I'll see myself out.

Excellent choice, in my opinion! Have fun Planet Coastering @Burbs, and prepare to waste a lot of time building stuff!

About the DLCs, if £38 is a bit more than you want to spend at once (I know the feeling!), then they are sold separately to one another, so it can only cost £7-8 per DLC, if you want.

I'm considering it as all part of the cost of the computer. I probably won't buy all the DLCs at once, get used to the game a bit and then see what I want to build. :)

I think the DLC is worth it, you get an extra selection of rides as well as new scenery and building items with each one. The base game has enough to get you going though.

You have never 'owned' them though. Always just licenced them if you ever had a skim through one of those EULA's. You could just burn the game files onto a disk now from your Steam folder if you ever wanted to replicate what 'owning' it was.

Steam is a brilliant platform to be fair, it has streamlined and made so many aspects of PC gaming far more convenient and better than they were before. Such as workshop integration and automatic game patching (if you wish).

EDIT: Although if Steam ever ceased to exist. My £6000+ (based on purchase cost) Steam game library that I have been building since Steam was first introduced in 2003 would be gone. Let's just hope that never happens. Although in that very unlikely eventuality it wouldn't be too difficult to make the a game think Steam was running.

That's my problem with it. I have games from the pre-windows era that I can still play (through DOSbox, at least) decades after official "support" has been pulled.

@Burbs if the discount doesn't happen you can buy steam keys or cd keys from elsewhere.

Example - planet coaster £28

Obviously do your due diligence, I've used similar (allkeys) sites without issue but be careful.

Edit: found for 26.74. Apparently using PayPal and issuing a chargeback if the key is a duplicate to retrieve your money, is the safest way
