40th Anniversary 2020 - ideas

Must have been a soft opening for the theme park on the Saturday, ahead of the official opening day, ahead of Corkscrew's official launch on the 4th. All I'm doing is helping out with some historical facts, sorry I'm not Carol Vorderman
It's fine, I wasn't intending to criticise you! Sorry if it came across that way, and thank you very much for your info!

Thing is though, much as I love them I think Towers would be loathe to invest in another significant water ride due to running costs and seasonality : (
They thought they didn't need a woodie either and it has really paid off for them.

An investment in a flume like Viking Voyage is EXACTLY what they need (only longer).

A fantastic queu swallowing, popular, safe long term investment as opposed to the gimmicky trend following attractions that are a waste of money and close after two seasons.

Flumes are just so much fun, and that's what it's about.

I love log flumes as much as you Log Flumes Dennis

Matt- Just checked, 4th April 1980 was Good Friday so the schools probably broke up for Easter on Friday 21st March and the park could have opened for the Easter holidays.:relaxed:

I know that some ideas suggested by the forums for the 30th anniversary were actually used by the park, so its worth putting ideas forward. Here's some suggestions:
  1. Limited addition food and drink menu with popular 1980’s food and alcoholic beverages
  2. Birthday decorations on Towers Street e.g. large cake, presents and bunting
  3. Competition with 40 winning prizes such as free tickets and merchandise prizes
  4. 40th Anniversary branded merchandise
  5. New attraction for 2020 marketed as part of the 40th Anniversary celebrations
  6. Summer event such as Alton Towers Live concert or outsourced event such as a circus to put on a show

For the 40th anniversary there should be a bronze statue (recycled from an old Tussauds waxwork painted orange) of John Wardley holding the hand of the Nemesis monster looking down to the ruins on Towers Street. A plaque beside him should read "He made the geeks smile".

If we're going to get a statue for the 40th Anniversary I think it should be of John Broome rather than John Wardley. :)

Sorry, my entire post was just a joke.

Broome's brazenness to create a theme park in a stately home was pretty compelling and should never be forgotten, without it we wouldnt have the park today. But to romanticise him as a Walt Disney type character would be very silly.

[/SARC] maybe every ride could have VR like Galactica did, showing you a much better ride than you are currently...[SARC]

Oh... just had a funny, albeit somewhat unrelated, thought. Imagine if every ride got VR, showing you how things were before... I mean, it wouldn’t work on every ride, but imagine going on something like Alton Dungeons with the ability to choose between seeing toyland tours, 80 days or Charlie... I MEAN,they’d never commit to such a project, but the technology is there...

ANYWAY, CARRY ON FOLKS
40th anniversary and all that.

A simple but great small 'walkaround' eg on Towers Street would be fantastic. Not a 'heres some concept art we found in the backroom' vinyl prints, but a neat walkaround tucked away. Europa Park had a couple rooms like that near their entrance, was just there to be found and it was super cool

Stick all the old bits hanging around in there rather than junk them.

Agreed. An Alton Towers Museum would be awesome. It could breath some much needed life into Towers Street by opening up one of the shop units, would cost very little to put together and would cost very little to maintain as it wouldn't require staffing. Just Dorris popping in with hoover and a duster at the end of each day.

Could have some custom wallpaper of old maps, old videos and a nice case with henry hound in

I wouldn't expect much for the 40th birthday. They'll likely wheel out one of those wooden birthday cakes (I think they had one a few years ago), call it "The world's biggest 40th birthday cake" and sell some pin/pop badges.

Set your expectations low, if at all.

My expectation is that they will add 40 brand new rides and attractions - World's most attractions ever added to a theme park in a single season.

1) New flat ride in ceebebies
2) Second New flat ride in ceebebies
3) new flat ride in x-sector (submission site)
4) new flat ride in dark forest
5) new flat in forbidden valley (ripsaw site)
6) new flat in mutiny bay / Wickerman area
7) new haunted hollow refurb
8) new tea party restaurant in gardens, with birthday cake
9) conservatories with plants to view
10) new indoor coaster in cloud cookoo land
11) new flat in cloud cookoo land
12) a new theme in cloud cookoo land
13) a new themed shop in ccland
13) new indoor play area in ccland

16) go floorless on oblivion
17) go backwards on oblivion

37) new waterpark slide
38) new waterpark slide
39) new waterpark outdoor rapids
40) towers grand hall restored, and used to host a new high quality restaurant with live piano music. Also to be rented for weddings and other functions, as well as this year's birthday ball- where random visitors throughout the season will be invited back to get a VIP experience, as well as open bar and as luxary buffet.

Wow, actually ran out of numbers before I ran out of ideas of things I'd like to see added. So they could probably push it and combine some of the above as one attaction.

So as long as we get the above or better I certainly won't have my expectations set too high.
