Dorney Park: General Discussion

So get this right. Since their last coaster in 2008, they have removed several kids coasters, Stinger and now Possessed. And they are replacing it with a shuttle GG.

Right.

Not in any hurry to go back.

Well, at least they're getting a brand new coaster, I suppose!

The ride was only filed for yesterday or today; if they were intending to can it based on coronavirus, they likely wouldn't have even filed for planning permission.

Also, Cedar Fair is seemingly pressing ahead with construction on an S&S Free Spin for Kings Dominion in 2021 as groundwork has already started there, so I don't think the virus has deterred them!
 
I visited here in 2009 whilst living in NYC. Went on a sunday on a sunny day and the place was dead. We left after about 4 hrs as we had done everything worth riding several times over. Its an awful place. Completely soulless.
 
I've had mixed experiences at Dorney. They have some good rides - Talon & Steel Force are both great fun. I didn't dislike Hydra as much as people told me I would, either.

Locally, it seems there isn't a ton of interest in the amusement park (not like they aren't spoilt for choice, relatively locally). - they're all about the water park. You can visit the 'dry side' of the park and there be almost no waits for the majority of the day, but the second the water park closes it becomes an absolute zoo.

There were lots of rumours about them getting a GCI as they were rolled out across the chain, but that never happened - I guess it's a double win here, add something new to Dorney and banish more Intamin headaches from the maintenance budget.

The drop on their Log Flume is nuts


Where possible, I suspect parks will try and progress 2021 attractions. Most will already be in contract and they will be key in regaining lost momentum.

Interestingly, this ride will be quite a lot bigger than Switchback; this will be 106ft tall, while Switchback is only 64ft tall, so it might be a bit more thrilling than Switchback, potentially.

It's also the first Gravity Group that Cedar Fair has ever built.
 
Hershey isn't that far away from this park. That was an absolute pleasure to visit tbh. One of my favourite parks in the world and quite possibly number one.

Despite loving my 2018 trip to Cedar Point I think I have fonder memories from my two trips to Hershey in 2009. Can't recommend it enough.

Dorney is worth a visit as it has a few good coasters but the place is totally soulless. I went once and never thought about going back. I don't think I ever will.
 
And with that, the application has now been withdrawn. I don't know whether that's due to the circumstances or whether they want to change the plans, but I could see it being resubmitted in the near future when things are a bit clearer.
 
Update; despite the plans being allegedly withdrawn, I don't think COVID was the reason, because they have now apparently been approved! I later discovered that every planning application from the original meeting was withdrawn due to Pennsylvania bringing stay-at-home rules into play just before it occurred, so this ride is now pretty much confirmed to be coming!
 
Dorney Park have confirmed they will be closing their Zephyr train ride, with an announcement coming in a couple of weeks. There are rumblings about a mini B&M dive being the 2024 installment, but we'll see:

In fairness, aside from the lazy RMC style recycling *cough* Gwazi *cough*, I can excuse them names as the steel industry was a big part in that area of states and Steel Curtain specifically is a reference to the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team and their legendary team from the 70s. I agree though that Menace by itself would have been just fine.

I was meant to go to Dorney 2 weeks ago but unforeseen circumstances cancelled that, so it'll be nice to have another cred when I eventually do go!
 
I am assuming that these parks name their rides with a metal in them because metals have connotations of being strong, so it gives these rides a sense of being powerful.
 
Iron Menace has been having press previews over the last couple of days, and various YouTubers have managed to get the opportunity to ride. Here is a POV from the park:

The ride appears to be going down well, with the layout and forces being praised by those who’ve ridden. The theming also looks very nice, from what I’ve seen!

However, it does appear that B&M’s newfound smoothness issue may be inflicting Iron Menace based on the ridercam POVs. I hesitate to judge a ride’s smoothness too much based on POVs, but the riders’ heads looked to be rattling quite a lot in those ridercam videos, and there even looked to be one or two quite severe jolts; I don’t know if it’s just me, but that transition at the end in particular looks really quite jolty.
