On the news today they were reporting from Leicester talking about the new local lockdown, and in the background... loads of people walking around . No wonder they're in the proverbial.

If the government want to do local lockdowns they should do it properly. Do it how it was in March with police enforcement, road blocks, questioning and stopping people getting onto trains etc to make sure their journey is essential.

I think that might come later in the week. Schools are closing from Thursday.

Talking about USA, there's talk of getting 100k cases per day if things don't get under control soon.

Does this count as a second peak? You could argue they never even got the first one under control.

Not a second wave in my opinion (although it is clearly a new peak).

Much as is the case here, although a more extreme example, the first wave was never fully under control and any increase in cases is a resurgence of the first wave.

A lot of the hotspots are in different states now to where the pandemic started too. The US is massive.

I live outside the lockdown zone, closer to Loughborough and Derby than Leicester Town Centre. My father works in the city and had to go yesterday to close down the office again. The numbers of people out and about that he spoke of shocked me! Also there are too many non essential shops still open! With the city being very multi cultural, I think the message has not been received very clearly at all, it needs stronger reinforcement!

I think its more of a second rise. I wonder how many will not survive this in America and how it will affect their low wage workforce levels.

The US has bought up all the sick of the key covid drug leaving none for the world

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/30/us-buys-up-world-stock-of-key-covid-19-drug

Sadly not unbelievable that a person as arrogant and self centered as Trump would do this with no regard for other human beings, bit I'm surprised the company allowed this to happen as well.

Just goes to show money rules.....

Probably partly explains why the drug will cost approx $3000 per person. That and the greed of the insurance companies.

I saw a post of someone's receipt of a 3 week hospital stay due to COVID and they weren't even ventilated. $160,000 for the privilege, luckily they only had to pay $640(!) out of their own pocket

We're so lucky to have the NHS and this has shown just how much we need to protect it from being split and auctioned off in the future.

After one day of operation Knoebels have amended their mask policy and now the only exceptions are if a guest is under the age of two or is dining. Apparently their relaxed guidelines didn't work.

Once again, screw disabled people I guess?

Maybe they changed their policy due to too many people taking the mick. I know mask usage is controversial in the USA so probably every Tom, Dick and Harry was claiming they were exempt. Doesn't help those with legitimate reasons though.

Their wording makes it sound like that was the case. To be honest I'm not very comfortable with private businesses deciding who needs to wear a mask, but I guess in the US they have to as there aren't any country-wide guidelines.

We're going to see more local lockdowns like Leicester in the future. Boris has rightly said that we can't go back into lockdown. Build build build is a proven technique for restarting an economy, a certain Mr. Hitler used the same tactics in Germany and it certainly worked...

I don't think we're going to see a second peak/wave after 4th July as many are predicting, The virus clearly doesn't spread as well outdoors otherwise we would already be seeing a huge rise in infections. As it is the Deaths are lower then they were last week, and we're back to near normal death rates for the time of year.

My worry is the winter. I think coupled with the flu and the cold weather is going to be a bad one
The cold weather could.make it easier to do local lockdowns as the incentive to go out is lowered.

Apparently UPS management "would like to see everyone in UPS facilities* wearing masks from the 4th".
Seems some big companies are gearing up in support of mask wearing presumably in an attempt to increase building capacity.
*If I'm not mistaken it's already a requirement for a few operations (aka physical package handling) job roles.
