Unpopular Opinions: Theme Park Edition

Although spectacular to look at, Fly is a truly mediocre coaster experience.

Speaking of Phantasia: Taron is overhyped and the layout after the second launch is mostly a waste of time. Very very good coaster, just not as good as made out to be

Bump!

After visiting both Thorpe and Mingo this year and riding two Intamin 10 inverters and much thought, I've made up my mind... I actually prefer Colossus to SIK.

As well as being smooth for me (unusual, I know!), Colossus has great theming, a nicer station, an incredible soundtrack (which I'm listening to as I write this!), a better queue setup, and just generally looks better than its next-gen counterpart. Plus I actually prefer its shoulder restraints (also controversial, I know) over SIK's lap bars, as the latter means you're thrown around more.

Wow, that’s an interesting one!

Did you not mind the restraints on Colossus, then, as they seem to be the main point of contention on which most agreed that Sik would likely improve upon Colossus substantially?

I haven’t ridden Sik, so I can’t provide my own opinion on that one, but given Colossus sits right down in my bottom 5, I sincerely hope that I’d prefer Sik…

Just added a bit about the restraints to my post, but as I'm tall I didn't get headbanging with Colossus's OTSRs and you're not thrown around as much as on SIK. I prefer restraints that properly secure you in, as opposed to ones that leave your upper half free.

What they seem to have in common is awful operations, today Colossus was dispatching every four minutes which meant a throughput of 300pph and about as much stacking as actual ride time.

Colossus does seem to be a bit inconsistent, from my experience; last Saturday, I had two rather different readings.

In the morning, it was absolutely hammering the trains out, getting a solid 2.5 minutes per dispatch and averaging close to 700pph!

In the evening, it wasn’t quite as fast; in a brief snapshot, the dispatch was 4 minutes and the throughput was about 400-450pph. I did notice they were having to “assist a guest” on practically every train, though; clearly there were some restraint issues.

I’ve also noticed this variation between trips as well; on my July 2021 trip, the ride averaged about 550pph, whereas on my September 2021 trip, the ride averaged close to 700pph. It is strange, as most rides seem to have a fairly consistent throughput, but Colossus’ varies a lot, from experience.

I rode Colossus on Sunday and it was incredibly unpleasant. Felt like it crashed into the elements and bounced all the way out. It has gotten so bad I can't find a place to put my head without it getting smashed

I have a deep dislike for Colossus. I am just shy of 5ft, so my head gets a walloping, it’s a horrible experience for me from start to finish. I wish they’d give it new trains at least, doesn’t even have to have lap bars just better, less chunky ostr’s if they have to. Bit more leg room in the trains would be nice too, if my short **** is struggling for space I don’t know how taller people manage.

I think that part of the reason I had no issues with the restraints is I may be tall (6'2) but I am also very slim. If I was broader I would probably have issues fitting on a lot of coasters, let alone Colossus.

Talking about Colossus’ restraints always reminds me of the last time that my dad tried to ride it.

Given that he’s 6’6” and has a 36” inside leg, there was no question of him ever trying to squeeze into the back row of a car, so me and him went in the front row of a car together while my mum sat in the back. I actually find the front rows quite spacious legroom-wise (compared to the back at least), but he even looked like he struggled with the legroom in the front.

He clearly struggled to get the OTSR down over his shoulders, but the ride op seemed very keen to get him in.

“Don’t worry, sir; I can get that restraint down a little bit more for you!” said the ride operator.

“Er, I don’t think you can…” said my dad, and as soon as the ride op stopped trying, he leapt out the car as quickly as he got in it… he still says to me that Colossus is one of only two rides that he’s ever been unable to fit into, with the other being what is now Drenched at Oakwood.

I then went round on my own (in that row at least)… and it was as rough as ever. I’m clearly not tall enough to not get my head walloped by it… I really don’t like it much at all, and I always find it rough.
