Strange questions that sometimes need answering (or not asking in the first place really).

All the pundits and commentators that get sent out to freezing cold stadiums have been raving this week about heated gilets. On air. I'm starting to think they are sponsored. Naturally, us lot back in the far-too-hot-because-of-all-the-video-wall studio mock them all night.

I'm not in to motorsport, but when I was a lad, the one fact everyone knew about F1 cars, was that the rear wheels are bigger than the front ones.
That clearly hasn't been the case for some time. When did it change?

Lego are going F1 crazy next year. I was just reading an article about the history of Lego F1 cars. Suddenly all the sets I remember having chonky rear wheels... don't?

Have I slipped universes again? And if so, why do I always slip to a worse one‽
Quick, someone tell me: when did Mandella die?

Changed a while back mate
Reckon there will be a Max vs George fight to the death tomorrow.

As for F1 Lego. About time really. The huge popularity of the sport in America at the moment makes sense

Me and my parents were watching a Christmas film the other day, and it got me thinking; if you think about it, isn’t the whole concept of Father Christmas/Santa Claus absolutely bizarre?

We tell young kids to fear strangers, yet at Christmas, we simultaneously tell them to be excited about a random old man breaking into their house while they’re sleeping to leave gifts. We also tell them that said old man “can see them when they’re sleeping”, “knows when they’re awake”, and “knows if they’ve been bad or good”… through a certain lens, isn’t that basically stalking, another thing which we tell young kids to fear? And even putting that aside, I think it sounds a bit terrifying when you put it all like that!

I know I probably sound like an overthinking killjoy, and I certainly didn’t think about it in this way as a child (like most young kids, I was giddy with excitement about “Santa!”), but is it only me who’s ever had this thought about Father Christmas as a concept?

You think that's bad? Wait until you hear about the Dutch version.

MATT N GO OUTSIDE
honestly... Don't overthink ancient winter traditions.
Goose will be along in a minute with a more eloquent reply but basically, Santa and FC before him are an amalgamation of so many traditions you'll go mad trying to unpick it all

Edit to add - don't forget the Finnish Xmas cat who eats people not wearing new clothes. Puzzle that one out

I know very well I’m massively overthinking it, but I’d never previously thought about quite what a bizarre concept the whole thing is if you comprehend it for longer than a few seconds.

I had to be told that Father Christmas wasn’t real at nearly 11, so clearly I didn’t comprehend the plot holes in the concept early on like some kids did…

If you like reading I'd recommend the Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. Nice play on the whole idea of Christmas when Santa (or in Discworld's case, the Hogfather) goes missing

Are we sure that @Matt N and @Zeock aren't long-lost siblings? :p

Why do people take bicycles on trains instead of just, you know, cycling?
I guess it depends on how far you’re going.

Cardiff Central to Cardiff Queen Street, for example, is a distance you can probably cycle. They’re only around a 15 minute walk apart, so the bike ride really isn’t very far in that case.

But if you’re going from Cardiff Central to Birmingham New Street, or even arguably Cardiff Central to Newport, that’s not a distance you can easily cycle. Taking your bike on the train allows you to cycle on both sides of your journey without meaning that you need to cycle an unfeasibly long way.

I admittedly say all that as someone who isn’t a cyclist, though, so a cyclist may be able to explain it better than me.

My theory is they want to annoy passengers on trains as well as drivers on the roads 🫠

@Matt N it is my stock answer to anyone who is getting a bit wrapped up in something. A kinder version of "get a life". Most often used with Zeock last year when he was over doing his revision and not getting outside for days on end.

Seriously though, 30 minutes outside away from what ever is winding you up is normally a good idea

Why can't I find garlic olive oil anywhere right now? How am I supposed to enjoy a baked camembert without garlic olive oil and balsamic to dip the garlic bread in?

.... If the lads I grew up with in the 80's, on the council estate, could see that, I'd get beaten to a pulp...
