The Smiler - General Discussion

If I remember rightly, the original plan was an IP, Halo, I believe. I think it fell through in the early stages.
Sorry to bump an old post, but - for what it's worth - the Q4Coasters YouTube channel showed some concept art of The Smiler in a video earlier this week, and she commented that the unused purple needles on the Marmaliser leg resembled the needles from Halo; see photo / video below at the 1:20 mark.

Is there a list of all theming changes that were made after the crash?
What I can think of:
- The removal of the needle logos on various signs for the Inoculator.
- Removal of half way corrected audio and sign.
- changes to audio in projector room, station and exit to remove any mention of correction, Marmalisation, ect.

And think that’s about it?

Oblivion also had its audio changed in the station and I think one of the queue line videos removed.

That’s it, I also think the teaser about a ride car disappearing in the tunnel was removed as well because it implied an accident had occurred?
The teaser about a train disappearing remains, I've clocked it for at least the past three seasons (including this one). I don't recall hearing "this ride is perfectly safe" for a while though.

Something that was removed from both X-Sell and Buy the Smiler was the interactive screens both rides used to have. I hope over time a lot of the removed theming pieces are returned

I think I remember Shawn Sanbrooke saying on the reopening day in 2016 that the Smiler logos had been removed from the trains as well, although I'm not sure whether this was due to the crash or not?

Also: this isn't a change to theming as such, but I believe that the mobile phone game was also discontinued as it featured images of a crashed virtual train.

Had a few rides on The Smiler today, it's running very smooth.

The theming and general ride area outside however are in an absolute state. Multiple sections of the marmaliser screen were not working properly (it looks a proper mess), all of the outside queue line screens had numerous faults with one of them displaying nothing, none of the marmaliser effects were working other than the flasher which even then has some bulbs out, the speakers on the block section before the vertical lift hill were completely silent (this was the case last season). The whole ride area looks like it hasn't been touched or maintained in ages. Not to mention that drainage is still a huge issue in the pit, so everything looks grubby. The only section I saw working properly were the 4 projectors in the indoor queue line but even then some of them were not aligned properly so looked odd.

The theming elements are a big part of this ride (at least for me, anyway)... To see basically everything not working properly after a closed season is really poor.

I did think that a lot of the park looked particularly dirty on opening day. Obviously they will be doing basic maintenance but other than that what have they actually done for months over winter? Think it’s time for some new owners to spruce some life into the park. The only nicely presented areas in the park seems to be Valley and Cbeebies land. But even in Valley you have Galactica which sticks out massively. Time we get new owners who within the next 5-10 years hopefully bin off Galactica and the whole of Dark forest. Rita and Th13teen are decent rides but in my opinion nowhere near good enough for a massive park like Towers. When we’ve got quality attractions like Nemesis, Wicker man it is time to get rid of the mediocrity

Smiler desperately need the work its lookong filthy and none of the marmilzers effects work anymore, really add to the ride they do

A number of vloggers have said that The Smiler is running unusually smoothly this year (although I cannot confirm this first-hand).

I heard speculation that the wheels were changed following the constant rollbacks between 2013 and 2015 (similar to Hyperia's wheels being changed last year), and - as a result - the trains ran faster but rougher?

Maybe the park is no longer too concerned about rollbacks and so have decided to prioritise comfort over speed once again?

(The fact that some of Oblivion's old theming has been brought back this year may suggest that the park is willing to reverse some of the changes that were made in 2015 and 2016 ?)

yes, there are multiple compunds of wheels, from hard to soft. the softer they are the smoother the ride but the slower the ride, and vice versa.

BPB opperate the big one (or did) where a the trains have differnt compunds, one with soft, one with hard, etc so rarther than swap the wheels out every time the weather is bad they can just swap the train.

at rip rockets they had problems (i think with valleying) apparently they were triling using the cold weather wheels in warm wether on some of the wheels of a train (and some other compounds) but the wheels melted to the track causing some problems

I was going to make a comment about "what is a cold day in Florida, 20°C?"
....
Then I remembered why Challenger happened.
