Redevelopment of Katanga Canyon

I agree with @Benjsh and @Benzin; I think Katanga Canyon is more easily closeable than it used to be, with Haunted Hollow and the path under Wicker Man now making crowd flow to Forbidden Valley and Gloomy Wood less of an issue than it used to be.

With the recent news about Rumba, I do think Congo River Rapids might now be on borrowed time. It costs a huge amount to run, is now seasonal and is by most accounts decidedly hobbled compared to its former self even with the return of the waterfalls.

I also don’t think Runaway Mine Train is as irreplaceable as many make out either. Yes, it’s relatively simple to run and well liked, but it’s also old and I feel like Katanga Canyon as an area is considerably easier to redevelop if they get rid of it and just put a bulldozer through the whole lot rather than try and weave a replacement to Congo River Rapids within it. The parks are not time capsules, and I don’t think RMT being a vestige of 90s Tussauds should save it from being scrapped if the park feels they could put something better there, even if I would ideally like to see it stay.

I wouldn’t have said Katanga Canyon was top of my list of redevelopment areas at Alton Towers, but I think it would move considerably further up if Congo River Rapids goes as I predict it might. It’s such an enormous plot of land that would become phenomenally underutilised if that happened, and without the Rapids, it is arguably a massive swathe of dead space. That area is too big for RMT to be its sole attraction long-term.

I’d love for something like an Intamin Blitz to replace Congo, with another more space-efficient water ride built elsewhere (or maybe integrated within!). I think the trenches and such could make for brilliant areas for a launch track or similar, and you could possibly even keep RMT depending on how you built it and have a Taron/Raik style dynamic between the two coasters!

What I think would be more likely to happen, however, is that they’d build something similar to the upcoming Minecraft area at Chessington on the site of KC. Merlin does seem to be on an IP kick at the moment, rightly or wrongly, and from their standpoint, I can imagine the location of KC, with an enormous amount of land and lots of passing footfall, might be a desirable location for a big-ticket IP land. I’d prefer for such a development to be used to fire a rocket up the backside of Walliams, but I’m not sure Merlin will see it that way.

Congo River Rapids is far more popular than Rumba and Viking River Splash ever were due to more prominent location.

In regards to pathways wad closed during Wickermans Construction

Was Vikings River Splash not in a prominent location? You pretty much walked past it in very prominent view going down and up the main hill of Legoland, didn’t you?

Granted, I only rode it once in 2009, but I entered it from on the hill, if I remember rightly.

If they were cute about it, I’d love to see a Mack rocking boat re-use the trenches with the coach park used for a new building. Opening up the bottom half of KC for redevelopment for a new area to tie in to Wickerman

I love the rapids, they’re one of the last remaining rides that I have childhood memories of, and I don’t mind that they give you nothing more than a few splashes of water. But for the space they take up as well as cost and staffing requirements, and the potential to add some actual family rides in its place through a revamp of the area, it has to be really tempting to do something there.

Although it’s hard to make a case that this area should be the next major area of investment in a park that has planning permission for a new coaster elsewhere, the World of David Walliams, Dark Forest, X-Sector… we can’t have half the park with construction fences round it!

I think it should be noted as well Congo River Rapids is the oldest ride at the park now serving the park for 40 Years and really it still probably the best landscaped area of the park

Whilst I haven't much to offer on the Katanga Canyon discourse beyond a re-theme wish, I shall alternatively share this lazily cobbled video inspired by a joke @Cheese made as we wandered through the bereft area on Saturday evening.

I think Katanga Canyon retheme is perhaps something that should be on the radar but I'm not sure it should be the first area they do work in, I feel that Walliams world is first on the list of area's that desperately need a retheme, perhaps a total change, with some buildings being removed, and new ones installed.

I'd find it very odd of Towers decide to remove rides and retheme Katanga Canyon given other areas of the park needs much more urgent attention. If the rapids have to go and I hope they don't then I'd would hope they are replaced with a modern water ride.

I do think a Mack Rocking Boat, reusing parts of the trough, would be a no-brainer. It actually has a lower minimum rider height restriction as well (1.05 metres, Congo is 1.1 metres).

That would be fantastic

Best of both worlds with the flume and the rapids 😁

Thing is, any water coaster (that Merlin are willing to pay for) that re-uses the rapids trough would at best use a quarter of it for a super-short ride. The rest would be left to rot in full view.

Adding to this, I'd ask Mack to do a full overhaul of the RMT at the same time, including replacing the train with a new style one (like AlpenExpress) for a lower rider height restriction.
