Monorail Refurbishment

Something I hope they do if they give the Monorail a refurb is build the trains a proper shed or cover to keep the elements off them can't be too pleasant for the workers to working on them outside

I believe there already is a massive depot no?

Just a quick note to try and avoid going around in circles with discussion on the Monorail. There's 86 pages of discussion, and while I don't expect people to read the whole lot - there's a number of points (such as capacity) that seem to be being brought up multiple times. A quick read through the topic will often answer questions and have a large amount of discussion that's already taken place.

Whilst the forum search is not great, you can also utilise Google to see if a point you're making has previously been discussed. Utilise the tag site:towersstreet.com in your search query to limit searches to here :).

I think he is referring to the trains stored outside
Yeah probably, but I'm really not sure they are going to want an even bigger, frankly huge structure that would cost a fortune just to cover over some trains that are designed to be outside? Maybe I'm wrong but even in a potential major Monorail overhaul, I just can't see it being a priority.

If they are working on the train it is moved inside the trainshed. The storage yard is usually only for storage of trains. Same as most other railways, they have indoor spaces for maintaining the fleet and outdoor spaces for storing them.

There was a train moving slowly on the main rails outside the maintenance area around 11am briefly just behind where the coke refill station is, which is a good sign, it didn’t venture away from there mind

How come Monorail doesn't require track replacement on normal railway track maintence is mandetory to prevent accidents
What track? It's a reinforced concrete beam, being gripped from the sides by rubber tyres.

A railway, conversely, operates using flanged steel wheels on steel rails. The sheer friction, kinetic energy and immense weight of a 400 tonne freight train, or high speed commuter service, grinding against metal naturally causes the rails to wear, warp and require replacement to prevent catastrophic derailment.

You don't need to replace the concrete beam, for the exact same reason you do not need to dig up and replace the M6 every time your car needs a new set of tyres... Though try explaining that to Highways England.

Altons monorail is steel tracked not concrete unlike some others, that said the ride system uses rubber wheels as you described and has very low wear

Besides the reduced wear due to using rubber over steel wheels, the track would have likely had maitanence done, replacing bolts, fixing cracks, replacing bus bars and more are probably being done

often this odd stuff is what requires the longest in terms of railway maitanence (depending on the average usage of the railway and type of rail) with fishplates, keys, chairs and more having to be inspected and replaced

I also wouldn't be supprised if the track has been getting small replacements, with bits that are worn out / cracked being cut out and replaced by a new section (in small chunks)as a lot of the track is flat / simple bends plate

I'm imagining a techie leaning out the window inspecting the track as they go.

I was meaning to ask if there'd been any sign of movement at all this year. Presumably they wouldn't be moving it if they already KNEW there was a major issue that prevented opening, so I guess it's a positive sign..?

They now have the jellybean train running at full speed, and have just added the pirate train also at full speed running at the same time.

They could be inspecting the block zones on the track (I am not too sure how the automated system works, if it is blocked or if it is moving block system)

Really hoping Cow Train is back this season. If that happens all locos are back in service
