Phantasialand: General Discussion

Overall very enjoyable, but a few negatives :

We were unable to board the first bus of the day at Bruhl station on 28th. Only let about 10 people on and the rest, of which there were many had to wait 30 minutes for the next bus, by which time many had sauntered off for alternative transport, IE local bus, Taxi. Of course, the next bus then got caught in traffic going in to Phantasialand, and took 45 minutes, meaning we didn't get to park until 12pm as opposed to 10:45 had we been on the first bus. Maybe need to run additional busses in the morning? They seemed to do it in the evening after park close.
Yes, we had a similar issue with getting a bus there as well. Missed the first bus (our fault), but second bus was significantly delayed and we arrived an hour or so later than planned.

Sorry to double post. At Phantasialand today, Taron, Raik and FLY have been done all day.

BBC Weather has been showing around -2 for most of the day in Brühl, which is normally a fine temperature for Phantasialand’s coasters to be running. I know that Europa Park experienced similar, or lower, temperatures in the week too with all the major coasters running, so I’m guessing there may be other factors at play with FLY and Raik. I don’t know though, all speculation.

Very unlikely to be temperature related, they've both operated consistently at lower temperatures in the past few weeks. And Black Mamba looked like it was running all day which presumably would be the outdoor coaster to have the most difficulty.

BBC weather are notoriously inaccurate too.

*In your own opinion

No. For example:

The BBC Weather app performs much worse than the Met Office in forecasting the weather later in the day and in the week ahead, according to exclusive research commissioned by i.

BBC Weather was “too pessimistic” and over-estimated the amount of rain on the way, the two-week study found.
The broadcaster’s app made the least accurate forecast of the five apps overall, also finishing bottom when it came to the forecasts made for later in the day.

Whilst I don’t want to get too much into a conversation about the reliability of BBC Weather (I’ve always found BBC to be by far the most reliable source of weather information, but that’s just my experience), I think it’s surprising that Taron and Raik’s downtime had nothing to do with the weather. Reports from thoosies who were in the park today is that both valleyed, and were subsequently down all day, which is somewhat rare, even more rare for both to valley on the same day.

As for FLY, that may also be completely unrelated to the weather, but it looks like the track was covered in snow, so not even sure if a test ride was attempted.

Crazy Bats was also down all day. So weather related or not, today was not a good day to be at Phantasialand. My heart goes out to anyone who visited today, especially if you travelled far to be there.

Heavy snow and steady wind in the area, so shifting small snow banks were probably slowing the trains...
They need a snowplough!
Wind and snow combined is dodgy for all transport...minor drifts can grip and stop a vehicle very quickly.

And, as an outdoor worker, checking forecasts every few hours every day, then going out working in it...
The BBC forecasts over the last few years have been very poor indeed...over pessimistic about rain...ever since they dropped the Met Office, who they are going to return to... after a great number of complaints about poor forecasts.

I use an average of three.

The rain radar is the best for planning outdoor stuff...you can see the weather actually coming in.

I didn’t say weather related, I said temperature related. If it was heavy snow and winds then that certainly could be the cause but as I pointed out, all those rides operate reliably at lower temperatures. It’s a big selling point of the park in winter.

Low temperatures do not automatically equal heavy snow. Where I live in the UK despite it dropping to -5C of late we’ve had glorious sunshine and barely a drop of snow!

A planning approval process is to be initiated for the potential expansion of Phantasialand. "The moratorium in this regard has now ended," explains Schumacher. Köllejan emphasizes that the planning process is open-ended and considers the consequences of surface sealing during heavy rainfall, traffic problems, and visitor parking in residential areas, as well as examining the preservation of the duck pond. The coalition partners declare an eastward expansion at the expense of the allotment gardens to be out of the question. A roundtable discussion will give local residents a voice. "There might also be another mediation process. Phantasialand should definitely have planning certainty within the next five years," says Köllejan.

The planning application for the expansion is finally being unblocked. The new city council coalition seems a lot less hostile to the park than the one before.

Something like this is believed to be the original master plan. The hotel car park has apparently been zoned for possible park expansion since about 2005. So adding parking behind crazy bats would mean the park could expand into that area. The light pink theater and concert hall area is rumored to include relocating fantissima there. That would allow them to get rid of the whole crazy bats building and put something new into that space plus the abandoned hollywood tour spaces.

That last city council statement takes the green expansion area behind the China car park off the table though.

If I'm reading that right, we might see Phantasialand's take on Rulantica by 2040 or so?

The relatively miniscule size of Phantasialand never ceases to amaze me. I wonder if the world-class nature of the park is somehow because they've been so constrained over the years, or if, in an alternate reality where they didn't build the original park directly in the middle of a small town, they would have been able to maintain the same quality over a much larger area? One of the great what-ifs in theme park history...

It's similar to Alton Towers in that regard, when development is constrained by the landscape and other restrictions, you have to get creative and this often leads to some of the worlds best rides (if the budget permits). In this case, Nemesis and Oblivion, Taron and FLY.

It's funny because the "no building above tree level" scenario in Roller Coaster Tycoon was always one of my least favourites due to the annoying and unrealistic height restriction and yet in Phantasialand's case this same restriction might be responsible for one of the greatest parks on the planet

I assume the theather mentioned would take Fantissima and potentially leave room for Hollywood Tour/Bats/Fantissima to be flattened and a new area opened up.
