Theme Park Staffing Issues

The geezer in the video below began working at Alton Towers last year, and uploaded a 30-minute video a few months ago which details his experiences as an employee there

Interestingly, he said that he applied to work at Drayton Manor (his local park) but never heard back, but he also applied to Alton Towers at the same time, and - unlike Drayton Manor - Alton Towers replied to his application immediately (to which he was successful), which definitely supports the idea that they are low on staff !

He said towards the end of the video that he missed the opening day disaster with the Toxicator sewage leak as he didn't start until May 2025, which also implies that Alton Towers don't necessarily only hire staff for April

P.S. He also said that he told the interviewers that his favourite ride was Nemesis Reborn (when they asked which ride was his favourite), and he ended up working in Forbidden Valley - although he's not sure whether this was because of his interview answer or not

As someone who worked in the theme park industry for many years, I can confirm that they don’t just hire at the start of the season. They recruit pretty much throughout the entire season. We had new starter inductions almost every Saturday throughout the entire season, and of course pre-season. It was only really November and December when recruitment didn’t take place.

I can understand that. My main concern with only training staff once or twice per year is the risk that some staff may suddenly quit, and thus the park would remain short-staffed for the rest of the season.

(A downside to hiring throughout the year is the need to provide additional training sessions, though, instead of simply training everybody all at once)

If Alton Towers asked me what my favourite ride to work on would be, I'd probably say Galactica because:-

A) As with Nemesis, the train sits quite high from the floor (as it hangs beneath the overhead track), and therefore the harnesses can easily be checked whilst standing, instead of having to bend over

B) Unlike Nemesis, there are only 7 rows to check instead of 8

C) As with Nemesis, there is plenty of room to walk past each row (unlike The Smiler, where operators have to lean across instead)

D) Unlike Nemesis, Oblivion, and Rita, I don't think there is an additional seatbelt to check? (I can't remember)

E) Unlike Nemesis, few others would probably say that it's in their favourite ride, and thus there is a greater likelihood of being given the ride

F) As with most rides (except Rita and Toxicator, I think), the station is indoors, and thus protected from rain

G) Galactica has notoriously long loading times anyway, and so staff working slowly wouldn't be all that noticeable

The only downsides that I can think of are that Galactica has 4 seats per row instead of 2, and it has large restraints rather than a simple lap bar
