I'm more worried about the tight spaces like queue lines and the monorail. Plus I believe you can have the virus for two weeks without showing symptoms, so just because everyone going thinks they're in good health doesn't mean they won't spread the virus.
This is why it would be a lot easier if the government had the balls to make a concrete decision on this.

Depends how responsible people are really. If someone's displaying all the symptoms and walks around Forbidden Valley coughing on everything then they should be tasered.

I would not even contemplate giving Alton Security anything more powerful than a water pistol. They have enough problems keeping the ticket touts in order & have to bring in reinforcements from ShowSec / Staffordshire Police on the "family friendly days".

Seems the Goverment have created a nice loophole to prevent them and insurers from paying out to these large and small businesses. As @BarryZola said above, if they don't want people to go to these places then they need to force them to close and offer support to help them and their staff through these times.

I personally don't think Alton Towers will open this weekend, more likely they will have a massive wages bill that wont be covered by park ticket sales.

Disney are paying all of it's staff while they are in shut down. Please correct me if i'm wrong but Alton's staff will not even receive company sick pay.

These measures are highlighting the need to ditch the zero hours culture and lack of company benefits.

A couple of free Merlin tickets wont pay the mortgage.

I think the attraction industry will need to do what the UK theatres have done... all of the attractions need to announce closure as one and specifically pin it on the government's advice. If some close and some don't that implies there was a choice involved, however if they say as one that they cannot open citing today's press conference it would give them the leg they need to stand on regarding insurance, etc.

Moving to a bit of a brighter topic, anyone know when the 2020 map will be released?

It was this time last year (Monday before park open), so come what may I would expect to see it this week.

I don't see how the could Cite the governments advice though. All the Government said was that they were not putting resources towards mass events as they need them for Hospitals.

Could Balppa make such a decision to close all attractions operated by their members?

I don't feel sorry for the airlines and certainly don't want the government pumping money in to them. They should have put money aside for times like this, and fewer people flying is probably a good thing.
Well, the rich will still be able to fly, but the likes of us couldn't go to Europa Park, doesn't seem fair really.

This will hit the low cost providers hard, the profit margins are very low in that sector. And when the travel bans are lifted it remains to be seen how may airlines will be left. Probably the premium ones, but they'll be little competition to drive down prices.

If indeed far fewer people were flying, there would be a lot less money flowing in so I'd imagine someone would take advantage of this to launch a new low cost airline.

With Thomas Cook and Flybe both going under recently as well, perhaps it's time airlines were run in a more sustainable fashion.

To be fair to the Airlines their lower margin operation have allowed millions of people to live more enjoyable lives. I'd hate to see that disappear. Sorry, thats off topic(ish)

On a side note, maybe Corona/Towers opening needs it's own topic on here?

Idk how we're even debating if towers will be open this weekend. Quite simply, it won't be. Towers won't open until at least 4th april I say
What's more concerning to me is that anyone in their right mind would want to go there at all right now!

Well some just don't care about getting the virus I don't think. Whilst admittedly I do have this mentality, even if it is open I'm not going to go as it's not fair if I do have it that I spread it on. I don't care if I get it but I don't want to be responsible for giving it to others.

really? Yes companies should have reserves and I am sure most of the airlines do. Nobody however could predict this. It’s going to affect way more businesses than just the airlines. What if you own a small business? Where could this leave you?

this is open to interpretation. Disney have a lot of college students doing a year at Disney on the college programme or international college programme (mainly in Epcot). They’ve got rid of most of the college programme kids with little notice. Many of the international restaurants at Disney are run by a third party and not all of them are offering any sick pay. Many live entertainment acts have been fired (some of which have played at Epcot for years). Disney are getting ready to reduce their costs for a three month closure, they are trying to pay only the employees they really have to.
I don’t expect many in the service industry to do much better, but Disney aren’t being as awesome as it first looks.

Can’t agree more. Have many arguments on FB with people saying they are going to Towers / Thorpe if it opens.
They don’t care if they spread the virus about.
They just don’t get it’s not socially responsible
:(

No, it's a trade association. They will provide guidance and knowledge sharing between their members, but they don't mandate anything. It's quite a strange scenario whereby a number of the members are actually more influential and powerful than BALPPA itself.
