Online Pornography to be blocked by default

Every household in the UK is to have pornography blocked by their internet provider unless they choose to receive it, David Cameron is to announce.

In addition, Mr Cameron will say possessing online pornography depicting rape will be illegal, bringing England and Wales in line with Scotland.

In a speech, the prime minister will warn that access to online pornography is "corroding childhood".

The new measures will apply to both existing and new customers.

Mr Cameron is also calling for some "horrific" internet search terms to be "blacklisted", meaning they will automatically bring up no results on websites such as Google or Bing.

But he told BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour programme he expected a "row" with service providers, who argued that, as a matter of "freedom of speech", customers should be able to type in any words they wanted.

If parents want to have their internet censored, fine, let them, but why is mine being censored due to the concerns of others?

Your thoughts on this?

Just another example of the state dictating what other people can and can't do with their life. When will it stop?

Enough is enough ffs. ::)

It is the responsibility of parents to ensure their kids don't see things, not the government.

And you can bet that anyone who tells their ISP to let them have porn will instantly be on a watch list of some kind.

This is very scary indeed, we are not China, for crying out loud! This is thin end of the wedge stuff. What next? Websites critisising the government get banned. Before you know it, anyone who disagrees with our Glorious Leaders is sent to death camps. Think I'm joking? It's already happening in America.

I saw this quote on another forum regarding the banning of internet porn (Slightly edited due to the language)

The Internet is built on porn, if you banned those lot there would be no one left.

I personally don't see any major harm in Internet pornography for the person watching. Watching it can relive stress and overall has more advantages then disadvantages. (I would post some of them, but it seems a bit too mature for Corner Coffee).

But this is ridiculous, Can the government just not leave us alone and get on with our lives? As mentioned it should be the responsibility of the parents to block pornography in the homes, not the Government ::)

Such a move would ruin the whole point of this song.

:p

In all seriousness, this is a bad move. This is effectively making internet porn illegal, even if those featured are consenting adults. I can understand the point about ISPs being told to block access to child pornography, as that's illegal anyway. But blocking porn featuring consenting adults? No. Just no. It's making me wonder whether the owners of any porn magazines have been making large donations to the Conservative Party, and that Cameron's wanting to give them even more money so he can get more for the Tories...

I don't see any issue with this. It is better to block at network level so each device doesn't need its own blocking software. People can opt out if they still want to view porn.

...surely more people are going to want it than aren't, right?

Many of the parents of those who are trying to 'protect' their children (understandably so), would, if they were being honest, admit that they turn off their own internet filters after dark, then carefully clean their search history before going to bed!

It's a real kick in the teeth for anyone who doesn't just want 'vanilla' pornography, and nobody likes the feeling of being under surveillance. How this is a sensible move politically, I'm really not sure - don't we have some REAL issues to be addressing in this country?!

I bet more people dont want this ban than do - it infuriates me that some parents cant take responsibility for their little brats. The number of stories I read about parents whose kids have run up £1,000 bills on their iPads. Why are young kids going on unsupervised? iPads or computers. Its just a cop out for parents and the state of this country when we choose to "ban" everything rather than take some responsibility over our actions.

You shouldn't have to "opt in" to access something that is perfectly legal. It's branding pornography as something perverse, which it isn't. But it's also placing too much control in the hands of the government over what people can access. Censorship is a dangerous thing

I think most are annoyed by this because they either do not feel safe knowing that someone knows what they browse or they do not want to admit that they watch adult material.

People have the choice of blocking it already so why not leave it at that and then just block all of the illegal pornography (such as child or rape)? This would make sense as nobody would feel uncomfortable, everyone would be safe, and pedophiles would be caught more easily if they searched for underage pornography!

Sure as hell they'll block non-porn accidentally too, and before you know it, you've got internet access like China.

Oh hello online tyranny. How are you? I should have known it wouldn't take long for you to appear on our shores.

I reckon they blocked it because of mounting pressure on the government to take action and get a firm grip on the issue.

(Apologies, I can't resist a good pun.)

This will damage the UK porn industry quite severely - and also the porn industry alone will lose a hell of a lot of custom!

I don't even see the problem with it. Sex is natural, people like watching porn - it's hardly dangerous stuff. I agree with porn depicting rape being illegal, that's very fair enough. But porn as a whole? What a way to ruin the internet, Cameron.

If they're going to block porn (which you HAVE to be 18+ to watch anyway) - are they going to ban death and destruction depicted on TV shows and in films? There's plenty of murder dramas out there that give off just as bad of an image!

It's up to the parents to control what their children see. It's easy enough to block porn on computers these days, the government should concentrate on tools like this rather than just censoring the whole thing.

Should be an opt-in system where people who have kids can choose to have it blocked, than an opt-out and you have to try and explain to your internet provider you want to watch porn.

People are uncomfortable with the whole idea of sex and porn is just a category that people rightfully regard as personal. Having to select whether you wish to view it is just going to make people uncomfortable and it genuinely wouldn't surprise me if this brought rape and sexual offence levels up rather than down.

In households with multiple people, this will cause embarrassment, frustration and possible arguments. I do not understand what on Earth the government are doing here. Porn is not evil or demonic or dangerous; and if you're stupid enough to believe that it is, you need to take better care of your kids yourself so that the sensible don't have to suffer.

Tl;dr - my internet = my business.

Or if you believe that, you should question whether you should actually be having children in the first place.

Can't see the problem, let them watch porn they will be disappointed with the real think
Also there is a small red x in the corner that closes porn websites
