[202X] Project Horizon (SW9?): Planning Approved

I'm sure I've seen an interview with JW, where he goes on a mini-rant about how much he dislikes dark coasters, because you can't see what's coming to brace, so they are either painful, or so tame they are boring.
(If I remember rightly, it was along the lines of "forget Black Hole, Smiler is better".) 🤣

I guess he wasn't a Euro Sat fan, then?

They’ll also be considering what can they build that can be effectively maintained by the park teams. No use building a modern dark ride coaster with switch tracks, fancy trains and special effects if there isn’t the capacity to maintain the thing

Could the original manufacturer for Horizon pulled out and that is what caused the delay

Also they may have to build the coaster before the building goes around it

Why would a manufacturer terminate their own contract that's in their best interest to fulfil? Their order books are filled up years in advance. If you wanted to place an order for a coaster, unless you're going to a cheap Chinese manufacturer then the earliest you'd be looking at right now is for 28/29 with the leading companies.

It could be they couldn't fulfil the order and or have problems delivering the original project orders it could be various factors

It seems that they clearly had a change of plan at some point and it has gone very much on the back-burner. I think they decided on getting some flats in instead and Toxicator was the first of them. If Horizon would have gone ahead as originally scheduled and planned, I don't think Toxicator would exist in any form, for example.

If they're sensible they will get the planning re-submitted at some point and it should get through quite easily again, or they'll not let it lapse somehow (I'm not a planning expert).

They only have to get started which it expires next year and the planning will be extended

That or they're waiting for TWODW's licence to expire before making moves.

Except there would then be a hefty financial penalty involved. You don't have the leading manufacturers that Merlin has worked with simply pulling out of contracts like that.

People are way over thinking this.

The project was initiated under the previous Merlin management structure, for what ever reason the incoming management decided to either delay or drop the project.

The possible reasons are:

1) Financial, possible but they are still spending capital across the group and at Towers so seems unlikely.

2) Felt the project was flawed in its initial design so have gone back to the drawing board creating a delay or cancelation if its completely disliked.

3) Felt the project was fine but that the resort had other more pressing priorities.

Also possible both 2 and 3 are true at the same time.

I could honestly see a decision having been made from the original plans to delay the project, but plus it with a wider overhaul of the area a bit later on.

Totally speculative here but investments like Hex, Skyride and Toxicator were right to be the priority to keep the lineup stable and refreshed. However they definitely seem more motivated by loss aversion than the need for growth.

Having the Dungeons boat ride, Horizon, Gangsta Granny and a new flat would be a pretty significant addition to the park (especially if they attach it to a big IP). The park is lacking attractions for 6+ years, therefore the biggest market to tap into for growth and development of the theme park.

I would agree, I think the park prioritised refurbishing the current line up (sky ride, etc) and bossing the theming of FV I think it is a good long term move, as it aligns the park more with higher quality parks (such as universal), but this may have come at delaying or cancelling horizon. I personally think it was the right move, as FV is very well themed (only Galactica needs some work) and getting hex and the sky ride back is great.

as for if it is cancelled or not, it is hard to tell the permissions allow them to START construction at the latest but you can continue after, so it may be happening for the 2028 season if it started construction in 2026

as for clearing the site, from what I have seen it is mostly covered with containers, skips and maybe a portable cabin, all of that could be moved and out of the way within a couple of weeks, we will probably only see it once it is just about to start construction, or during closed season if they need to move stuff that is in use

it also is important to say it is far from public areas, so not really possible to tell if any work has happened

It's the main area I really want a BTS tour at Towers to see Flag Tower, 4D Cinema, Dungeons Building and Nicklodeon Outta Control
