The energy required for AI text generation is pretty minimal.

Generating 1,000 text responses to AI queries uses the same amount of energy as about 16% of a smartphone charge.

Generating 1,000 images uses the same amount of energy as driving a car 4.1 miles.

Training large language models, on the other wing, has historically been the REALLY intensive part; although firms have recently made massive gains in this department too. Hence the excitement earlier this year around DeepSeek.
