BENCH!

The recent news about the paving bricks for £50 at Alton has given me an idea, which could be more useful than the bricks currently on offer. Obviously, this could depend on Alton Towers actually allowing us to provide them with a good quality bench within their premises. No contact has currently been made at this point.

The general idea is that we as a website community club together to provide a very good quality bench to be placed somewhere (to be decided along the way and in the future) in the Alton Towers theme park (my choice would be around the actual Towers or in the Gardens somewhere, but it could be somewhere special for someone else?).

The bench will feature a nice large metal plaque explaining that it has been provided by the members of the TowersStreet website for the pleasure of all future visitors of Alton Towers (or something similar).

As I mentioned in another thread, I'll happily put down £20 to start things off and I'll be happy to take control of this if people actually want to take things forward. Obviously, if there is not too much interest, we can leave it.

Good quality benches could cost anything between 100-400 in our range, so if anyone spots one anywhere, shout up. Maybe someone knows a local tradesman that could sort out a deal? Maybe someone knows where Towers got their last load of benches from and can enquire? We could probably sort this out for £200 or something completed by using some contacts?

Shall we do something that lasts?

I'm happy to take the risk of paying out the whole sum if we all decide on a nice bench, I can chase up payments afterwards over time. We all need to collaborate and find a suitable plaque and bench. And like I say, if someone or other could get an okay for a location or something from AT, I don't see a major problem?

Im interested ONLY if the plaque can read...

The Worlds First(ish) Fusion Bench
Every Bench You Ever Dreamed Of
Its an ULTIMATE Bench You Know

It's not my favourite, but we're a democracy here, so it's definitely not ruled out just yet :)

Edit - I've contacted someone, not exactly directly linked to Towers, but this person may give an idea on costs with a bit of luck. Crap update, I know :)

Thanks for your intention to contribute Rob. Much appreciated as people in this country are not exactly loaded in these days and times. I'll just assume that Jonathan will put a couple of quid towards it too, or I can send the boys round. His choice really. Ben has provided some very valuable input :)

We're up to a promised £30 at least so far. Maybe a mod or someone with THE POWER could have a word if they get the time. Let's see how it goes :)

I chip in my immense arse for load testing of this bench. On the proviso that it is a smoking area.

I'm pretty sure that at this early point, it can't be guaranteed that the BENCH will be in a smoking area. I'll put you and Ben down for a fiver each though, if that's alright?

Well guys, looks like we're up to £40 ;)

Jokes. We're still at £30 unless the above very kind people would like to contribute :)

If we get past about £70 pound in promises and word from the mods/owners of this site that the idea is OK, I'm sure we can realistically start discussing locations, as long as it's OK with Towers. Lots of ifs there!

This is a great idea and I would also be willing to contribute a few pounds :) . Will need to check with my parents though.

While this is a nice idea, I see several issues:

1. Are Towers actually going to want/be allowed to accept a bench from us?
2. Towers already has quite a few nice benches that were added within the past few years. Couldn't a plaque just be added to one of those, rather than providing a mismatched bench to be put somewhere?
3. If Towers was a family business and the owners were well regarded by enthusiasts then fair enough, but although Towers holds fond memories for me, it doesn't feel right to me to club together to buy a bench for a theme park run by an organisation with the vast wealth, resources and CBA attitude of Merlin.

As soon as the £50 Brick was advertised I thought there must be a better way to spend hard-earned money.

It reminded me of a more communal approach when I visited Thailand they asked tourists to hand sign a tile and make a small donation to help fund a Buddha monument. It made me think I’d prefer to contribute money towards a Minton tiled floor in the Towers instead of over commercialised block paving.

Anyway, I like the sound of your idea and would be happy to contribute £10. :)
