I have to say, I do find sub-cultures or indeed mainstream cultures cringey if the participants lack any kind of self-awareness and take it too seriously... but then again I'm sure people feel exactly the same way about people who choose to spend their time talking at length about theme parks...

It's those who lack the self restraint and discretion that give any fandom a bad name. Unfortunately, that small number who are the most vocal about whatever it is soon become whatever a fandom becomes famous (or infamous for).
I for one like anthro art, and I also happen to enjoy watching episodes of my little pony, but I don't let that dictate who I am, nor do I preach it loudly and proudly, and insist that everybody else does. It's an interest, much like Alton Towers and roller coasters are. It's something that I enjoy doing or talking about in my spare time. I'll happily nerd out about those things with like-mindeds, and would be happy to explain to anybody curious what it's all about, but it's ultimately in the individual's own personal tastes as to what they enjoy.

You're allowed to, but you hadn't explained why. I see now that it's because you're uncomfortable with the the idea of dressing up... But is that basis alone enough to have this whole 'people get creeped out by others who enjoy dressing up' idea?

See, most hate on fandoms is caused just by lack of knowledge and/or what people have been told, and if people actually went and did some research they'd find out much more credible information.
Just from a quick look on Wikipedia (argh, noooo, Wikipedia):
My comment was some innocent innuendo, "Carry on" style. I didn't expect it to be taken so seriously to be honest. I thought that would be obvious given my live and let live attitude. Perhaps a less defensive pose would result in more understanding from people who haven't encountered it before.What I didn't expect though, was what Al found.
I genuinely don't have an interest in this, each to their own, but if that for some reason involves sexual attraction surrounding furry characters? I confess that worries me slightly.
Anyway, mine was an innocent comment of mild opinion, I shall avoid the debate further.

Eh, each to their own, if you like dressing up as an animal or watching MLP, then do it. I'm 18, and one of my favourite things to do is get dressed up at Halloween. Neither fandoms are shoving their views and opinions down anyone's throats, they're not hurting anyone, so let them be. People cos play, I think its really creative, and I also think its great that people have something to be so passionate about, if it makes someone happy, is anyone in the place to criticize it?

I've not read all of every post in this topic but MP seems to be talking sense.
Personally I find anything taken that far a bit weird, overly serious and lacking in self-awareness etc, but who am I to judge? And as long as it's (or at least the more hardcore stuff) kept private and no one is harmed against their will, people are welcome to whatever lifestyle, fetish or whatever they want. And fair play, it must take guts and a lot of self-acceptance to get that far into something so looked down on by mainstream society.

i have not been through every post in the topic but i must say that i have no problem with either of these fandoms. though wierd in there way MLP:FIM is very well written, cast and animated and is just enjoyable on many levels. and as for furries, i have always wanted my own full custom fur suit.
its just the radicals that are the problem in all aspects of anything but without them would there really be any sort of over the topness anywhere? i personally find japanise cosplay abit wierd and odd
