Eau de Smiler

As I hadn't been to Towers in several months, I was expecting this claim of the restraints smelling to be an over-exaggeration. But every time I went to ride it on Sunday, I was hit with a disgusting stench the second I sat down. It was awful; like a school gym mixed with wet dog. I noticed it occasionally wnt away and I would stop noticing it, only to come back with a vengeance.

I don't think I've ever come across anything quite like it on any coaster I've been on.
 
I meant to say this. I rode it during ERT right at the start of the day, so before any of the bodily fluids from the days riders could work their way into the restraints. Yet the stench was foul. I've experience the smell on other coasters but not to the same extent as on The Smiler. Please Towers, change the foam over the closed season!!

Given the roughness of the ride, the stench, and the daily reports of people losing their dinner I think its time to rename this ride to "The Puker"
 
I know it was a bit of an in-joke before it actually opened, but the restraints definitely smell like vinegar now!
 
Me too. I dont ride it anymore, its too rough. Not sure what causes more nausea, the loops or the square wheels. Probably both but I dont enjoy it now. Whoever thought to install this over a B&M needs shooting. They only had to look at SAW to get an idea of how rough this ride would become after a short period of time.
 
Everyone involved it the project should never be allowed to touch another ride again. And yes, that includes God and his minion.
 
It really isn't that rough, guys! Some seats are rougher than others, mind. :p

I didn't say it was that rough, I don't mind that so much. But parts of the ride are just badly profiled, or the terrain something isn't right that's obvious, it's folly to suggest otherwise for a new coaster.

Bits falling off it, rough as anything at times, concrete overload. It really isn't Towers standard. And sorry, but was cramming as many loops in as possible the be all and end all of coaster design?

Creative use of space is something actually I think B&M and Towers have worked rather well to create before, don't you?

That makes absolutely no sense.

If people here really think The Smiler (one of Europe's greatest ever coasters, frankly) is unrideably rough, then you don't really deserve to call yourself an enthusiast. Take up flower arranging if you want something entirely bland and inoffensive to be passionate about.

You can see why Towers don't give a toss about enthusiasts. They build Britain's best coaster for two decades and all it gets is a slating (though that's discounting Diogo's comments of course, the man who might as well be replaced with an auto-bot that detects any topic with 'Merlin' in the text and automatically posts some clichéd insult.)

The Smiler has its issues but I wouldn't want rid. Look how popular it is, look at the queues. It's brought plenty of people through the gates and unlike Th13teen it's generally delivered.

I think most will agree Towers were missing out by not having a multi looper. Gerst have their issues but the Infinity Coaster was clearly the best fit for the land available.

We can sit and nitpick through all the holes and issues from construction to completion to the present day but we have what we have and should be happy for it in my opinion.

The Smiler - I'm bloody glad we have it.
 
Yeah whatever, think whatever you want, I'm just pointing out that it makes zero sense to say that you "genuinely love The Smiler" but that you'd "seriously be happy to see it go and be replaced already". What does that even mean?

'I genuinely love van Gogh but I'd be happy to see all his works destroyed.'
 
I find The Smiler quite smooth tbh. :p It's rough in places, but no worse than getting a beating on fairground rides.

It would be nice if the ride was smooth from start to finish although I don't think it's that bad at all.

Pardon? Lets get something clear here. Nemesis, over 20 years old, still rides as smooth as silk. Air, 12 years old, smooth, Oblivion, 14 years old, smooth, Swarm, Thorpe Park, 2 years old, incredibly smooth, Nemesis Inferno, 11 years old smooth.

Speed Oakwood, 8 years old, not bad actually, SAW Thorpe park, 5 years old, extremely rough, Smiler, 2 years old, getting incredibly rough.

Now, unless im missing something here, as far as im concerned, a rollercoaster should offer a smooth ride, unless its wooden, or designed to give you whiplash (like Infusion at Blackpool). If a rollercoaster gives people headaches after they come off (remember Corkscrew) then its a problem. Everyone rode Corkscrew because after all, the roughness came from the fact it was 28 years old. Smiler is 2 years old. Not 28, but 2.

Yes, the ride quality is dependent on what ride car you go on. I believe there is one which has the wheels of a 50p fitted to it, but it shouldnt be like that. Take Nemesis for example, every single time you go on that you know your gonna get a nice smooth ride, and that you will enjoy it, and you can let yourself relax and your thrown into the inversions. Smiler, depending on what car your on, you have to brace yourself.

To me, a rough rollercoaster, especially a modern steel one, just isnt enjoyable. Its not designed to be rough, so something isnt right. That doesnt make me or anyone else who doesnt enjoy it any less of an enthusiast. Tell you what, , go fit square wheels to your car and drive it everyday, then have someone tell you to give up driving and walk eerywhere because obviously, driving isnt for you....

Seriously though, what a stupid comment to make....
