Future Flat Ride Speculation

Had toxicator been placed in the same place as Ripsaw was, the build time would have been cut dramatically. They built the concrete platform during the warmer months last year to ensure it had time to fully cure and dry.

Assuming they don’t build another flat up (or dig down) the installation of the flat and theming elements would only take a few months, or the off season.
Placing the ride on the same spot may not have been an option... foundations, very heavy rotating machinery, steep slope and water ingress...may not have been a repeat option.

I think a breakdance (covered) where enterprise was makes alot of sense.

As suggested a new Pirate ship in Mutiny bay would be great.

Something in Dark forest ( Huss Magic?)

Second flat ride on X Sector at some point, maybe another thrilling flat.

The park would then be pretty sorted for flats for the foreseeable.

Shawn Sanbrooke is at Chessington today and has once again mentioned the idea of Monkey Swinger moving to Towers. Not only would it fit in the Flávio’s spot, but Shawn has got a bit of a record of “hinting” towards projects. For context, he “suggested” people get their last rides on Blade and Duel before their closures, as well as correctly predicting other investments such as Toxicator and the reopening of Sub Terra

Could well be something to keep an eye on
It wouldn't surprise me. Twirling Toadstool used to be in a similar area of the park to the Flavio's spot, and it would simply be good just to have another flat ride at Towers.

If I recall correctly the area toadstool occupied covered both flavios and carousel. I think they’d need to move the carousel back towards the middle of the area as before.

looking at google earth I would say it was about the same size (although the clearance envelope may be larger) but I think it would be better in the older position as it is closer to the path and I think it would look more of a spectacle (rather than hiding it behind another ride)

Given that most of Alton Towers' recent rides are simply recycled versions of older rides (e.g. The Haunted House / The Curse At Alton Manor, Nemesis / Nemesis Reborn, and now Ripsaw / Toxicator), my prediction is that there will be a flat ride in X-Sector called Resubmission, and a pirate ship in Forbidden Valley called Switchblade (or something similar).

Taken to the extreme, I also wouldn't rule out Re-energized in Dark Forest, and Enterpreneur springing up somewhere as well !

I'm not sure why Alton Towers chose to bring an almost identical ride (Toxicator) in the same exact spot that Ripsaw once stood, instead of a different flat ride; I'm not sure whether it was due to planning permission, unoriginality, or nostalgia?

Is Toxicator heavier than Ripsaw? I'd assumed that they were the same size / weight, but I suppose that it has additional screens et cetera. If the site was previously able to support Ripsaw, then would it not also be able to support Toxicator as well? Also: my memory of Ripsaw is hazy, but I had assumed that the two rides were in the same location, with the main difference being that Toxicator was spun around by 90 degrees? (and elevated onto a platform)

Nearly. Ripsaw was situated where the entrance and merge part of the queue for toxicator is now. It was rotated and moved over the pathway you currently walk under it. It’s nearly the same location but moved over slightly.

Any flume anywhere please 🥺

I swear Merlin had one going spare a few years back over at Sea Life Oberhausen.

I'm surprised this was never looked at for Towers.
Although not a flat ride, it would be a smart investment to put that flume into Mutiny Bay. You could free up the space by relocating the arcades adjacent to Eastern Express, and using some of that space

I was thinking the site the otherside of Sharkbait Reef as that seems empty and is only used for backstage/car park.

The arcades is a fantastic space and I had in mind something like Piraten in Batavia at Europa Park.

It'd be perfect for Munity Bay/Katanga Canyon either way

Just get rid of the rapids imo.

I'd rather we added rides rather than got rid of them especially water rides.

Especially as rapids rides may be a dying breed in the next few years.

There is a need for those 1m and 1.1m plus rides and for more of them, not less.

That's not happening as they've just invested a load of money in it. We shouldn't be wishing away rides at Towers especially since Merlin doesn't like replacing them
That is exactly on point, especially when Merlin only seems to build rollercoasters (with some exceptions).

I could see the Rapids being changed to a Rocking Boat system if the new installation elsewhere works well. Means restraints can be added etc and reduce/remove the lifeguards.

I'm not convinced Towers need a flume. They're popular for about 20 days a year and have huge running costs if done right, plus the H&S needed unless they can fit restraints?

Well this is demonstrably untrue. Merlin have built a total of 11(ish) coasters in the UK.

They've created at least 14 other attractions at Alton Towers alone during their ownership.
I slightly exaggerated yes although clearly said with some exceptions.

With Toxicator being the first thrilling permanent flat ride at Towers in years and Thorpe Park's last thrill flat ride is Rush which was in 2005.

Looking at this, there were a number of rides being built during Merlin's ownership with a focus on children's and family rides mainly at Legoland, Chessington and Cbeebies Land.

I was right with some exceptions when it came to thrill rides, more major non coaster rides and especially water rides.

With empty sites on park, glaring gaps in the line up and no rides that can get you splashed at Alton Towers specifically, it is concerning when a lot of the whole family and thrill focus was coasters.

I'm hoping Toxicator is a turnaround with this and we see a few more flat rides for both thrill and families in the future.

Rollercoaster wise under Merlin we've had which you've rightfully pointed out is 10 rollercoasters (11 if we count Minifigure as 2).
Thirteen
Smiler
Wickerman
Octonauts
Swarm
Saw
Hyperia
Mandrill Mayhem
Minifigure Speedway
Duplo Dino Coaster

Other rides we've had without counting secondhand rides in the portfolio:
Toxicator
Nemesis Sub Terra
Croc Drop
Barrel Bail Out
Mamba Strike
Ostrich Stampede
Kobra
Zufari
Flight of the Sky Lion
Fire and Ice Freefall
Mia/Autumn's Riding Adventure
Destiny's Bounty
Big Easy Bumpers
Train in a Shed (Ghost Train)
Numerous Cbeebies Land Rides
Possibly further rides I may have missed.

Counting secondhand rides:
Storm Surge
River Rafts
Trawler Trouble/Timber Tug Boat
High Striker

Retrosquad and Flavios is not counted as they were pop up additions.

You're right yes in that they haven't just done coasters but my point does reflect that we haven't seen many water rides, flats and dark rides with some exceptions.

It would be great to see a flume or water ride in the park that's ‘adjustable’ to operate all seasons. I wouldn't be against the rapids being removed in favour of a water ride utilising the same space (given the number of staff required to operate it now, as well as all the H&S measures).

"Some exceptions" being the majority of their investments, which therefore aren't exceptions but the rule. The coasters are the exceptions.

I was counting Nemesis Reborn as my ish. They built/rebuilt a coaster. The original intention was a replacement, a retrack was settled on.

You're forgetting Merlin's single largest UK investment to date, Ghost Train. Throw in the short lived I'm a Celeb and Black Mirror Labyrinth Mazes, in addition to The Slammer. Those are just the ones you've missed from Thorpe Park.

Merlin primarily invest in rides and attractions which aren't coasters. Coasters are the exception. They have the longest lasting impact, in many respects, but they're not the default.
