Galactica: General Discussion

I was asked to remove mine for TH13TEEN on Easter Saturday which I found extremely odd.
Never heard that before. In fact, I think it says on the signs that all lose items should be secure, but doesn't say not permitted as it does on some other rides (though, it's obvious they never proofread the signs :p)

I'd love to see the results for the foam pads on The Smiler restraints...

Oh how I've missed the Eau de Smiler!
Think they've replaced them now. shame, the ride isn't the same without the scent of all the previous riders neck sweat

Even if they have replaced them, it already smells awful. First weekend of the season they were fine, but by last weekend... what a pong!

I also got requested to remove my glasses on Th13teen the Thursday before Easter Bank Holiday, the first time I've ever got asked to remove them which is very odd! I wonder if something has happened?

Personally I took my glasses off for Galactica which I thought was no use at all because my eye sight is very poor without my glasses on, so I didn't bother focusing the wheel because I couldn't see anything!

Although once placing the VR set on my head, I would've of struggled with them on! I could only imagine that I would of suffered the pain of my glasses crushing into my face.
But I did find the experience enjoyable to say the least, it could of been better, it could of been A LOT worse.

The removing glasses on thirteen seems to have been introduced this season. The only coasters other than Galatica the OH has been asked to remove his on are thirteen (from this year) and Rita.

Back on topic(ish) a friend was saying the latest release of the Samsung Gear VR headsets are apparently designed to accommodate glasses although it's still supposed to be a bit of a squeeze. Hopefully if VR takes off more headsets will start to accommodate them and it will become a non issue.

Regarding the glasses thing - I was once told to remove my glasses for Rita (which meant I couldn't really see what was going on). The glasses were put on the top of a locker - which wasn't the ideal place for me as I'm small and short sighted! I didn't have to take my glasses off for any other rides though (and I think I went on Rita a different time with the glasses). You would have thought they'd be more worried about glasses on Oblivion if they were going to worry with any of them.

Anyway my point is that if they are going to regularly have people removing glasses for Galactica they should have a safe place to store them, and a place where people can find them. My glasses are very expensive due to being a high prescription so it would worry me coming off the ride not knowing if they were safe and being unable to see where they were.

On a different topic - are the VR sets securely attached? People have mentioned the possibility of getting hit with them if they are taken off mid-ride, could the sets also fly off the ride?

I found mine to be very secure. You adjust the velcro strap around the back of your head yourself to get the tightness you desire. Mine didnt move all flight.

With regards them coming off mid ride and hit with them, I would suppose if you take it off and let it hang, then yes, particularly on the laying on your back section, it could hit you in the face. I would recommend if you take it off mid flight that you hold on to it. It is fixed by straps to the harness anyway so it wont fall off the ride as such.

I thought VR could work really well on a flying coaster....it doesn't IMO.

First off, what a FAFF! headsets replaced in the pouch by staff, after being cleaned by staff, restraints then raised. new riders get on, pull down the bars but not allowed to remove VR headset, you have to wait for staff to take them out the pouch. They then get wiped again and given to you. they then have the faff of making all seats are locked correctly and off you go.

The lift hill is really good with the VR, the audio is also nice, then it's all just a bit rubbish. You lose all sense of any forces from the ride and the picture quality on the VR isn't that great and shaky whilst on ride. The video doesn't really give you a sense of flying at all. My headset was tight to my face and it was still shaking around and ended up really hurting my nose.

The VR actually makes the ride seem even shorter than it already is and adds nothing to the ride for me. Now i've experienced it once, I wouldn't be bothered if I never went on it again. I have been fortunate enough to ride the Alpenexpress with VR, that was a much better experience and far more re ridable. I don't think VR is cut out for inverting coasters.

Towers have tried to polish a turd and have ended up with doo doo on their hands. The original Air was a far better experience.

One thing that is very noticeable is the lack of screams from people going around the ride, there isn't any thrill to it anymore (some would agree there wasn't any in the first place).

I've yet to ride Galatica and I'm hoping to ride it soon.

I'm going to reserve my opinion on Galatica until I've ridden it.

Other than that, with regards to VR on roller coasters in general, personally I've not experience VR on a rollercoaster, but I personally feel that VR should be restricted to 4D cinemas and home entertainment. Cadbury's World 4D has a small section with the Crunchie rollercoaster advert and moving seats, very impressive but you can't replace the thrill that you get from a real rollercoaster with full wind in your face, which I presume that you won't get as the VR goggles will block out most of the wind. I personally would rather instead of the VR added to a rollercaoster, I would rather have the rollercoaster build inside a tent/building with some mind blowing visual effects, The black hole and space mountain comes to mind, but only make the special effects much much better.

Who knows, once I ride Galatica, then I might be turned to VR. However I still feel that people should be given the option whether they would like to have the VR experience or not on Galatica as oppose to being force to wear the goggles.

I'll let you all know what I think once I've experienced Galatica.

.
as has been discussed before, the problem is that, if not all the riders wore the headsets, Galactica wouldn't be " the world's first roller coaster fully dedicated to VR, so the park wouldn't be allowed to claim that.

My sister said that when she went on VR theme park experiences in Florida there wasn't a headset. Is that how Galactica differs, or is it not VR without a headset?
