Hex [2024 Refurb]: General Discussion

Bit late to the party, but I got to ride the refurbed Hex for the first time last weekend. It was great to get back on it and overall I do think they've done a good job.

I'm pretty happy with most of the lighting changes; the backlit TVs in the Octogen aren't ideal but I am not sure there's much that can be done about that. The thing I am most pleased about is the improvements to the audio quality and volume in the vault!

The fairly lights on the branch are overused, I'm hoping they can take this feedback onboard and make a few tweaks for next year.

All in all though I cannot really complain. I just hope it can operate for the full 2025 season!

I also got to ride it this past weekend for the first time since it reopened, and I completely agree with you. I enjoyed all the changes apart from the crazy lights in the branch. Just need toning down a little.

I would say use an OLED TV, but considering they are showing the same video day in day out it almost defiantly would burn in and be ruined quite quickly

It’s not a static image though? I’d be intrigued to see them try it as the current solution is poor
Agree, I don't think the Octagon video would cause problems for OLED displays. They could even be set to spend the 90% of their time they spend 'off' refreshing to better protect the panels.

OLED technology has improved a lot in the last five years. Burn in is far less of a concern that it used to be - as long as they’re not displaying a constant static image for years at max brightness it’s really not anything to worry about. And anyway, LCD panels with LED backlighting (the most common type) are also prone to backlight failure - and since the display backlights ARE running 24/7/365 at a constant level, I think that’s far more likely.

The guy works for MMM and is being made redundant tomorrow. This conversation in the comments is slightly concerning:

One of the major factors which could be forcing Merlin to make people redundant is probably the government's new minimum wage and workers rights...

Of course, I won't go political here, it is one thing facing Merlin and the industry at large.

Would a random employee of MMM known the health of the company at corporate level?
Probably to an extent, yes.

Don't forget that MMM are a group-level function, unlike Towers, Chessie, midways etc. - whereas Merlin (in terms of employee numbers) is huge, when you look at it at group level (ie anyone not associated with a particular attraction), I doubt the number of employees is that high at all.

As a result, it's much more likely that news, small facts, general 'VIBES' (ugh hate that word) on how the company is doing would trickle down to such employees than your general rides staff member at Thorpe, or technician at Towers.

I would assume the majority working for MMM are not on minimum wage due to the type of work they are doing and the specific knowledge they should have.
