Media Coverage of Alton Towers

Fair amount of difference in the media coverage of her and the other victims.

Safe to assume the others want to move on whereas she might enjoy the money that comes with the story of "amputee has baby".
 
I think they will move on soon. Whilst they can still cash in on the victims, they will. But once the comments slow down and people start questioning why it is news, they will move on to the next story

People have been questioning regarding Princess Diana over the years but the papers still run articles about her or shoe-horn her name with tenuous links in unrelated stories - the Daily Mail ran the story the other week about the a report that was published that mentioned the history of Alton Towers and at every opportunity mentioned and pictured that Princess Diana went on the log flume with William and Harry!

So I suspect this will continue with Vicki - when her child is potty trained, gets their first adult tooth, starts school, goes to a theme park for the first time...the list is endless! :D

They rode Thorpe's Loggers Leap, not Towers' Flume.

Negative media about the park is bound to touch a nerve on a fan forum about it. But I hope we don't return to the frenzy some people had over it a few years ago, that read almost as if negative media about the crash was some how a strange/out of character phenomenon for the press to do.

The story was newsworthy, it was big news at the time and the press coverage was exactly what you would expect for such an event. Following other stories of its nature, it was predictably chip paper long before many on here accepted that it was. The fact this thread hasn't been posted in since 2017 shows that.

Miss Balch having a baby is a relevant press story and it's natural that they wouldn't print "woman has baby" without reporting as to why it should matter.

The only gripe I had with the press at the time was the shocking laziness of the press to actually investigate reality.

Even BBC News I remember running a CG 'recreation' of the crash that showed the train stopping upside down on the batwing, using 'emergency brakes' (like a car!)

The confusion on how coasters actually work unfortunately added to the perception that they're easy to go wrong.

Aerospace is statistically the safest way to travel. Trains are safer than cars. Yet car crashes never get the same media coverage that even minor plane or train incidents get.

Coasters are designed to thrill you by triggering natural feelings in your body that would normally be associated with danger. Parks usually exploit that further with the themes and design elements of their rides.

So when an incident occurs, there's going to be a great degree of interest and intrigue from the general public. The traditional media report things that people are, should be or are likely to be interested in. So basically they're giving the people what they want. Even with the BBC there will be a degree of sensationalism involved.

I think I mentioned a while ago that Concorde suffered the same fate. 1 major (and tragic) incident and the machines otherwise excellent safety record was tarnished until it was retired and spawned many documentaries. "Concorde, world's first supersonic passenger jet crashes" is far more of an alluring story than "Bog Standard Boeing 747 crashes".

Yeah I get your post but that's not what I was on about. It wasnt the fact a big deal was being made, which youd expect, but the laziness of the journalism. Makes you realise how inaccurate the news often is.
