More fences

Currently in Alton Towers after a good, but surprisingly busy day. Walking through the gardens I noticed the area in front just below the conservatories was cordoned off and new black fences being put in place along the wall.

A friend of mine working there said Towers are doing it anywhere there is risk of a fall, I.e. an unprotected edge. Said it's due to H&S. Apparently all these fences have been going through planning permission for the past year from the council.

I took some photos, will try and upload them later. But it's more fences.

Yet still no fences on the pathway right next to the lake...

Sometimes i wonder if they are trying to retheme the park into Bob the builder land. on the quiet, so its too late when we realize. :D

Yay fences, my favourite attraction at Alton Towers!

I like how they're putting fences in weird places now and not the plain obvious places...

What is the 3rd picture of Gary? An event at the Atrium? (hope you dont mind me asking) I've never seen it like that before.

English Heritage are now allowing them to tarnish the natural beauty of the gardens with these eye sores? The amount of people who visit the Gardens in the first place surely does not justify ruining the gorgeous landscape for the most ugly and pretruding installation impossible to improve "safety". This is one instance where history should dominate the constant need for wrapping us up in bubble wrap.

I know this was beyond a joke in the first place, but... yeah.

It's stupid but the fact that family could sue Warwick shows how twisted the legal system is. Those fences at least look ornate unlike the crap they put in her ladyships garden.

See I thought originally all the planning permission for the fences in the gardens were all rejected, and then they appealed and they were rejected as well? Unless they have since got planning permission (or they are being naughty and putting them up without permission).

I don't understand why they need to apply for planning permission for a fence. It's not as if the public can see it outside the grounds, and it's definitely not 4m high.

It will be because of the towers (and I believe gardens) being listed buildings, so you can't just do what you want with them without permission.

Gardens are grade 1 listed, house is grade 2 listed. There are some protected views too, especially across the lake (hence why battle galleons only takes up half of the old boating lake).

Indeed, the whole of the Towers 'gardens' estate is Grade 1 listed, this is pretty much all of the land in the estate that is not currently theme park and not just what we know as the gardens. There's a tonne of listed stuff at Towers actually.

:)

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a few more fences crop up to be honest, they seem to be appearing at regular intervals... :( It is surprising that the side of the bridge directly next to the water has not been protected in any way though!

English Heritage are quite surprising really. They objected to certain parts of the lodges development which has resulted in some ugly fencing that will be around the lodge site and the main building, when built this year/next year. They seem to be all for fencing. Doesn't help when you have H&S at Towers going mad for fencing left, right and centre.

The fencing looks horrible in my opinion but they have put too much up and not in the needed areas like the bridge by the side of the water doesn't have any fencing like scott said. I wouldn't be surprised to see more fencing around the park. I'm fine with it if it is needed like by the water but there is no point putting it where it isn't needed. The fences at Warwick castle are decent enough so there should be that type of fence instead of the ones scattered around the park now.

Somebody at English Heritage/Council/The Man obviously didn't have their heads screwed on. This would have be a great opportunity to put a clause on that allows them to stick fencing round the gardens, but only if lighting is installed and the gardens are kept open after dark. :)
