Hope this is the right place for this thread. Just seen this link from the Burton Mail that the Holiday Lodges in Oakamoor have been given the go ahead from a high court judge.

Controversial plans for 250 holiday lodges in a disused sand quarry near Alton Towers have been given the go ahead despite a High Court challenge from a local protester.

The cabins will be part of a large new leisure development at Moneystone Quarry, Cheadle Road, Oakamoor.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council had granted outline planning permission to developers Laver Leisure Ltd in September last year.

But the decision was challenged in court by local objector Paul Housiaux, who claimed the decision was "irrational and perverse."

So draaaaaaging this thread up from depths of the forum deeper than even the Sub-Terra excavation site.

This proposal, for 250 lodges and pool, bar, gym, cycle routes etc just 4 miles from Alton Towers has finally had a decision made on its latest planning application by SMDC after it was submitted in 2019(!) aaaaaaand….they have refused it.

The developer now needs to decide on either an appeal, amending the plans or walking away.

It’s a shame really as it would provide some much needed competition to onsite accommodation in the local area.

Could be an interesting one for anyone that part of the world

The application for this has now been granted.

As a local I’m in two minds. It’s a lovely looking development that could drive trade in local business’s some of which are failing.

But Oakamoor and the surrounding areas are already rat runs for Alton Towers, this development is obviously going to add to that, in the documents they aim to have 42K people staying a year if I read it correctly.

It’s obviously going to mean the local paths/walks/greens etc are busier, obviously something I and many other who live in the area use all the time. Not against it as I think the area is a hidden treasure but you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth. The area is stunning during the summer and it’s now going to become a lot busier.

The site itself is a mess so something needs to be done with it, but it’s a huge site that’s bigger than Oakamoor and Whiston combined.

Overall I guess I’m for it, many locals aren’t

I just hope it’s priced accordingly in order to keep the riff raff out because right now the area is quiet, peaceful and that’s the way I’d quite like it to stay even if there are going to be more visitors within the area.

Here’s the decision documents anyway for anyone who wants to read it.

Completely agree on transport.

Those of us watching along know:

1) The CVR has already said it would add a platform to the bottom of the hill in Oakamoor just before the tunnel to serve the site.
2) This would mean the railway would only be around 2 1/2 miles from Alton station.
3) The new station in Leek is almost finished and set to open early next year that could serve as a great park and ride hub for the whole moorlands
